7 Dangers of Diet Pills

Here are seven reasons why the dangers of diet pills far outweigh the benefit of any potential weight loss. With so many companies and products, it is easy for unsafe ingredients to find their way into popular diet pills, going unnoticed until adverse reactions are reported to the FDA. The main ingredient in many diet pills are stimulants that have been found to increase risk for heart attack and stroke. Diet pills often contain amphetamines, anti-anxiety drugs, and antidepressants. Department of Health and Human Services, an analysis of 127 dietary supplements (including weight loss pills) found that 20 percent made illegal claims on the labels stating that the product cured or treated disease. Many diet pills are simply a combination of caffeine and other diuretics, which cause water loss. You are less likely to check food labels, record your food intake, and fit in your exercise if you think a pill is going to do the work for you. Weight loss. Unintentional weight loss can be the characteristic leading to diagnosis of diseases such as cancer [1] and type 1 diabetes . [7] Around 25% experience moderate to severe weight loss, and most others have some weight loss. [7] Greater weight loss is associated with poorer prognosis. People with HIV often experience weight loss, and it is associated with poorer outcomes. Medical treatment can directly or indirectly cause weight loss, impairing treatment effectiveness and recovery that can lead to further weight loss in a vicious cycle. Intentional weight loss is the loss of total body mass as a result of efforts to improve fitness and health, or to change appearance through slimming. Weight loss in individuals who are overweight or obese can reduce health risks, [19] increase fitness, [20] and may delay the onset of diabetes . Weight loss occurs when the body is expending more energy in work and metabolism than it is absorbing from food or other nutrients. HIV and AIDS Information : : Unintentional weight loss

Unintentional weight loss. Weight loss, or wasting, is one of the most common symptoms of untreated HIV infection, and can occur at any stage of infection. Weight loss occurs when the body is using up more nutrients than it is absorbing from food. You may eat less than you used to (and need to) because of loss of appetite during ill health. The most important ways to prevent weight loss are to treat HIV-related infections promptly, and to ensure that your nutritional intake is adequate. A dietician can help you look at your diet to ensure you have an adequate intake of all the main types of nutrients, and recommend any changes to fit in with any drugs you are taking and to help you cope with problems such as nausea. You can help by taking symptoms such as loss of appetite, persistent nausea and diarrhoea seriously and seeking prompt medical advice. However, weight loss can still occur in people taking anti-HIV drugs and needs to be taken very seriously as some research suggests that unintentionally losing 5% of your body weight in a six-month period is an indicator that you could become seriously ill because of HIV. If you have been unwell and have lost weight as a result, then taking HIV treatment is likely to help you to increase your weight and lean muscle mass. If you have lost weight after an HIV-related infection, a dietitian may recommend increasing your calorie and protein intake to try to regain it. more...

Medication and Weight Loss

Medication and Weight Loss. Insulin is just one of the many different classes of prescription drug that can cause weight gain. “Most of the medications that actually increase weight are in the areas of diabetes medications and antidepressants,” says Marvin Lipman, MD, a world-renowned specialist in diabetes and the chief medical advisor for Consumer Reports. However, as with all medications, the relationship between them and weight is complex. “Many of the diseases that we treat involve both weight loss and weight gain in and of themselves. In addition, certain types of blood pressure medication, such as beta-blockers and calcium-channel-blockers, can also cause weight gain in a small minority. Other drugs that could cause you to gain weight are thyroid-replacement medications, anti-inflammatory drugs and steroids. What should you do if you suspect that one of your medications is causing weight gain? Finally, people frequently attribute weight gain to their medication, but they really need to look at their lifestyle and their pre-illness weight first. If a man has a high-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, then it may not necessarily be the medication that is causing his weight gain. Weight gain can be a side effect of many different types of medication. more...

How to Use Flaxseed Oil for Weight Loss - Superfood Profiles

How to Use Flaxseed Oil for Weight Loss. Both flaxseed oil and ground flaxseed can help with weight loss in ways that most people wouldn’t expect and it has nothing to do with dieting. Weight Loss and Omega-3. The alpha linolenic acid in flaxseed oil is an essential fatty acid (EFA). Flaxseed Oil and Fat Storage. The EFAs in flaxseed meal and flaxseed oil are essential nutrients. Sarah Houston cause of death : Boiled alive by internet

For her part, Sarah had suffered from eating disorders from the age of 14, first anorexia and then bulimia. And while her parents had thought she was over the worst of it, she had, in fact, been taking DNP for the previous 18 months. Her parents are now campaigning to highlight the risks of taking DNP and, as the Mail reveals today, are joined in that call by others who have lost children to this drug. Like Sarah, she purchased the drug over the internet and, again like Sarah, she hadn’t told anyone what she was doing. Her skin and the whites of her eyes had turned yellow and her breathing was rapid and shallow. But those who take it are desperate, and that is something the people who sell this deadly drug cynically exploit. ‘Sarah had had an eating disorder for a long time, and the tragedy is that she had nearly made it through to the other side. In 1933 it was launched as a slimming aid — but was soon removed from shelves when it transpired that those taking the drug ran the risk of heart attacks and developing cataracts. ‘She wanted to lose weight and that is the celebrity culture today. Sarah’s parents certainly think so, and for that reason they believe that those who package and sell the drug are culpable for what happened to their daughter. more...

Dietary Supplements for Weight Loss

The authors noted that results from high-quality trials indicate that chitosan has minimal effects on body weight and these effects are probably clinically insignificant. Over - the - counter weight - loss pills : Do they work

And are they a safe option for weight loss? The most effective way to lose weight and keep it off is through lifestyle changes. Weight-loss pills — prescription medicines, nonprescription drugs, herbal medicines or other dietary supplements — are all, at best, tools that may help with weight loss. But there is relatively little research about these products, and the best studied of these are prescription weight-loss drugs. Also, possible side effects and adverse reactions to weight-loss pills can affect the treatment outcome. And researchers know much less about the potential benefits and risks of over-the-counter weight-loss products. The standards for regulating the production and marketing of these two types of treatments are different. The maker of a dietary supplement is responsible for ensuring the safety of a product and making honest claims about possible benefits. Among people completing the trial, the average weight loss in the supplement group was 4.2 pounds (1.9 kilograms). The average weight loss in the placebo group was 0.9 pounds (0.4 kilograms). And the trial was only eight weeks, which is not long enough to know if the supplement will help promote weight loss over the long term. Dietary supplements for weight loss. Female Hormones : Estrogen and weight loss

Many people are confused by estrogen and its action on body fat. For example, estrogen may have one impact in the brain, another in the uterus, and still another in your fat cells. So here are some of the major things to understand about estrogen, complication and all. Estrogen & the Menstrual Cycle. Estrogen sensitizes progesterone receptors and progesterone sensitizes estrogen receptors. This means low estrogen or progesterone will have a negative impact on the other hormone as well. Estrogen and progesterone have opposite effects in many tissues. During the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle both estrogen and progesterone are elevated together with progesterone more dominant. In animal studies, estrogen sensitizes the body to insulin and aids fat loss. Insulin and cortisol have far greater impacts on fat metabolism compared to estrogen and progesterone. Thyroid hormone and the adrenal catecholamines (aka adrenaline/epinephrine & noradrenaline/norepinephrine) are higher on the fat burning hierarchy than estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen and progesterone need to be in balance as they both enhance the action of the other as well as offset the action of the other. Since these hormones are given in static doses across the menstrual cycle, women lose the natural rhythmic changes in estrogen and progesterone. more...

Iron issues and weight loss

Iron issues and weight loss. My doctor has me on an iron supplement,  and it seems like it stalls my weight loss. I'm 20 and my iron is super low and I want to get it back up fast so I can move past all the symptoms it's causing and feel normal again! My guess is that it's that, and not your iron supplement. I have iron issues as well and taking the iron doesn't seem to affect my weight loss, but it did cause my digestive tract some trouble. I felt terrible when my iron was really low and I didn't know what was going on. It is worth dealing with the digestive issues to not have the hair loss, fatigue and other symptoms of low stored iron. I was extremely anemic (hospitalized twice in 2 months for it) and I found that the iron supplements were horrible on the stomach. My hemoglobin (red blood cells) was in the 70's and my ferritin (iron stores in blood) was 2. I only know that they took my blood and found the iron count to be about 32. I guess I don't have a lot of suggestions on what to do on feeling crappy with the low iron. more...

The Liver and Weight Loss – Liver Doctor

Home » Liver Problems » The Liver and Weight Loss. The Liver and Weight Loss. The liver is the major fat burning organ in the body and regulates fat metabolism by a complicated set of biochemical pathways. The liver can also pump excessive fat out of the body through the bile into the small intestines. Thus the liver is a remarkable machine for keeping weight under control, being both a fat burning organ and a fat pumping organ. If the diet is low in fiber, some of the fats (especially cholesterol) and toxins that have been pumped by the liver into the gut through the bile will recirculate back to the liver. A high fiber diet will reduce the recirculation of fat and toxins from the gut back to the liver. If the liver does not regulate fat metabolism efficiently, weight gain tends to occur around the abdominal area and a protuberant abdomen (pot belly) will develop. It can be almost impossible to lose this abdominal fat until the liver function is improved. Once this is done the liver will start burning fat efficiently again and the weight comes off gradually and without too much effort from you. What is effective in the long term is to eat the correct foods and nutrients for the liver to improve its fat burning function. Many middle-aged people with excess fat in the abdominal area have a “fatty liver”. In this condition the liver has stopped burning fat and has turned into a fat storing organ. If you have a fatty liver it is vital to be patient, as it can take between 3 and 12 months, depending upon the amount of fat deposited in the liver, to remove the excess fat from the liver. more...

Tertiary TCAs including amitriptyline, imipramine and doxepin1 tend to cause the most weight gain. Secondary TCAs desipramine and nortriptyline may cause mild weight gain. Beta blockers including propranolol, atenolol and metoprolol, which are used to treat a variety of cardiac issues, may cause weight gain, possibly due to fluid retention or other factors. more...

L - arginine and Weight Loss - Cardio Health Research

L-arginine and Weight Loss. The most relevant effects L-Arginine for weight loss are boosting levels of nitric oxide (NO) and HGH (human growth hormone). Study showed that Nitric Oxide (NO), which is synthesised from L-arginine by NO synthase in virtually all cell types, regulates the metabolism of fatty acids, glucose and amino acids. The study proved that an inhibition of NO synthesis cause hyperlipidemia and fat accretion in rats, whereas dietary arginine supplementation reduces fat mass in diabetic fatty rats. In the 2008 study at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, researchers examined the impact of arginine on body fat mass in two groups of endurance-trained athletes who took L-arginine or a placebo while doing aerobic exercise. Throughout the four-week study, the arginine cluster encountered considerable reduction in body fat proportion and fat accumulation contrasted to the placebo cluster. Study: L-arginine and Type-2 diabetics. more...
