If you incorporate an exercise bike into your workout routine, you will give your legs, heart and lungs an awesome workout while having much less impact than walking, jogging or running will have. Every gym worth their salt has an area dedicated to the exercise bike; in fact many have more than one model for you to get your cardio in. An upright is the traditional machine that you are used to seeing and is actually much less expensive than you might think it is. A recumbent machine has chair-like seats that are high and support the back for optimum workout. You still get the cardio workout by pedaling but get some toning done to your arms, chest and back as well.
The Best Recumbent Bike Workout for Weight Loss. But you can get an efficient workout on a recumbent bike using interval training. Interval training is a short, intense form of cardio exercise. You can adapt most cardio activities, including recumbent cycling, to an interval workout. The set time for each interval can vary. You can choose a one-to-one interval, or if you are a beginner, try a 2-to-1 ratio - set up your recovery period to be twice as long as your intense period. If you are new to interval training, do your intense activity for 30 seconds and recover for one minute.
The treadmill intrinsically burns more calories than a recumbent bike. In a situation in which your primary goal is weight loss, you will want to focus on a machine that will incorporate the most muscle groups into your workout. This would mean that the treadmill would be the more effective calorie burner, but there are other variables to be considered. The truth is that you can burn an equal number of calories on either the recumbent bike or treadmill. Because the treadmill recruits more muscle groups, it will burn calories at a higher rate at the same level of exertion. Pozarnksy revealed that the recumbent bike does not recruit, to a significant degree, the postural muscles for the sake of stability. The treadmill will burn more calories in an equal amount of time. Recumbent Bike Weight Loss. Don’t Toss Out the Recumbent. Just because the treadmill is a more efficient calorie burner than the recumbent bike on an even exertion plane doesn’t mean you can’t experience an effective weight-loss workout on the recumbent bike. The recumbent bike does have its benefits.
You walk into the gym knowing that weight loss is your goal and cardiovascular exercise is therefore necessary. Upon entering the cardiovascular zone, you're suddenly conflicted between choosing the recumbent bike or the upright cycle trainer. The recumbent bike was originally designed for gym-goers looking for a form of cardiovascular exercise that wouldn't aggravate existing injuries. For example, those suffering from back pain or balance issues may find the recumbent bike appropriate for their cardiovascular needs because it removes the element of core stabilization. In addition, those who suffer from knee injuries may find that the reclining position of the recumbent bike keeps their knees behind their feet and therefore decreases overall pressure on their joints. The indoor cycle trainer mimics the form and function of a tradition outdoor bike. Since the bike applies a certain amount of added effort, the upright bike is not only great for cardiovascular training; it can also help to develop core strength and muscle tone. What makes the indoor cycle trainer more effective is its intensity-specific design, which forces the user to work harder as the workload increases and, even if the two machines offer similar cardiovascular benefits, the use of additional muscle groups on the upright bike would ultimately result in greater long-term results. Since no conclusive studies have been made regarding cardiovascular results at higher intensities, both the recumbent bike and the indoor cycle trainer are efficient tools for weight loss.
With the right equipment and design, recumbent bikes can be used for riding unpaved roads and offroad, just as with conventional mountain bikes. These typically have two 20" wheels or a 26" wheel at the rear and 20" wheel at the front. Just as with upright bicycles , recumbents are built and marketed with more than one seat, thus combining the advantages of recumbents with those of tandem bicycles . There are also hybrid recumbent designs such as the Hase Pino Allround that utilize a recumbent stoker in the front, and an upright pilot in the rear. The center of gravity is lower and in the case of long-wheelbase recumbents further back than with upright bicycles. The disadvantages in balance and maneuverability (see those) make starting more difficult on recumbent bicycles. On a traditional bicycle, the rider can stand on the pedals and pull against the handlebars, although on a recumbent the rider can push against the seat. Recumbent designs of both prone and supine varieties can be traced back to the earliest days of the bicycle. It is important that you do not set the resistance too high when you are first starting out. If you are in continual pain, it is a sign that your resistance is set too high for your fitness level. The pedal action and resistance in a spin class will differ from what a beginner would experience with a regular stationary bike. Spin classes are usually quite intense so you may wish to ride a regular stationary bike for some time and work up to joining a spin class. It’s also recommended to go for machines with heavier flywheels: these require more effort and engage all major muscle groups of your body into the workout, which, in return, allows you to burn more calories per training session. Other than weight loss, this kind of exercise bike can also be used to improve cardiovascular and lung capacities while increasing your metabolism, hence allowing you to burn fat even when you’re not actually working out. However, sportsmen and trainers recommend varying the intensity of your workout in order to benefit the most from the machine. For example, in a 30-minute workout, you can indulge in five minutes on maximum intensity, ten minutes on moderate intensity, five minutes on maximum again and the remaining ten minutes on fairly low resistance to allow your muscles to cool down.

The best cycle for weight loss is one that you will actually peddle, rather than one that will end up rusting untouched in your garage. The amount of calories you burn per hour indoor cycling depends mainly on peddling resistance and the speed at which you peddle. Because a recumbent bike supports your back rather than engaging your core muscles, when peddling on a recumbent bike, you may burn fewer calories than you would on an upright bike at the same speed and resistance. The leg position on recumbent models, though, may give a better workout for your thigh and hip muscles than an upright model. If you already own a bicycle and enjoy peddling outdoors, an indoor cycle trainer is an obvious choice for days when outdoor peddling is not an option. The down side of an indoor cycle trainer is that many people find the narrow seat and bent-over upper body positioning uncomfortable, which may limit peddling time.
