Her friend gave her Oxy ELITE Pro, a weight-loss supplement she said would give Samone the energy she needed to push through it. Samone wasn't worried; she assumed there was more to the story (and in fact, a Pentagon investigation couldn't find direct evidence that DMAA was responsible for those deaths). "We agreed that the soldiers had probably misused it," Samone says. It never occurred to her that the pills might be contributing to her symptoms, and she was determined to lose weight, so she kept taking them. So in early September, she called the FDA to report her suspicions. To her dismay, she found that "it's not the easiest thing to contact the agency. I need to go to the hospital.'" There, a liver specialist quizzed Samone on everything she had done and eaten. She thought he was talking about the first recall, and said she did. Then they checked the date and found that the new version had been recalled too, only days before. It was supposed to be off the market, but his patients didn't know and kept buying it, he says. She spent a week and a half in the hospital in 2013, awaiting the results of a biopsy of her liver. more...

Weight Loss and Birth Control Pills

The connection between birth control pills and weight loss sparks a contentious debate in the medical community. On one side are doctors backed by years of research that says that combination pills don't affect your weight, and on the other side are legions of birth control pill users who attribute their unwanted pounds to the pills after reading that weight gain is a possible side effect. The truth is that they're both right, and that a simple pill switch may help you shed the extra weight. Carson Liu says that combination pills may lead to weight gain due to the actions of the individual hormones. Tristi Muir disagrees, however, citing research that showed no link between weight gain and oral contraceptive pills. She says, "The fact is that as women age, they gain weight. On average, people in both groups gained approximately one pound per year." So the bottom line is that your weight gain may not be the fault of your pill, but switching may help you and isn't likely to hurt you. more...

Can Birth Control Cause Weight Gain

Do you think you are gaining weight because of birth control? One of the most common beliefs among women is that birth control causes weight gain. One of the most asked questions about birth control is if it plays a role in weight gain. Birth control does not make you gain weight. They have also looked at the changes in weight that take place in women over time when specific methods of birth control are used. With one exception, no direct link has been found between the use of birth control medications and weight gain. Best birth control for acne that won't cause weight gain

I was on Marvelon for years and never gained weight (stayed at about 125-130 and I'm 5'9). I think a lot of people use it as an excuse for getting fat and the fact that as you get older you tend to put on weight. So if you don't have any need for birth control and you are really paranoid about weight gain, you could always just go on antibiotics or something for your skin. Dianette is really good for acne but it isnt something you should use over 5 years, i was on it since i was 15 and never bothered to change it. No wonder i felt like i was dying.i kept getting serious pins and needles in my legs all the time. +Period was regular and I had no babies. +No weight gain at all, even tho it made me quite hungry and i was eating more. -It's a really strong pill and you can only be on it for 2 years. So i cant take it anymore but it was the best pill i have ever been on! Yeah, yasmin or yaz is your pick in the US for that. I on team tiny titty until i was 18/19 and on the yasmin, then suddenly. Then suddenly between 18-19 they went up to Ds and have stayed that way ever since. Although I have been on all of the above and my sex drive was still through the roof. more...

American Hair Loss Association - Women's Hair Loss / Oral

Women's Hair Loss  >  Oral Contraceptives. Since the "pill" was approved by the FDA in 1960, oral contraceptives have become one of the most popular forms of birth control used today. Millions of women are prescribed the pill each year in this country, but very few are aware that oral contraceptives are a common trigger of hair loss for many who use them. The "pill" suppresses ovulation by the combined actions of the hormones estrogen and progestin or in some cases progestin alone. The American Hair Loss Association recognizes that for the most part oral contraceptives are a safe and effective form of birth control. However, with that said, the AHLA believes that it is imperative for all women especially for those who have a history of hair loss in their family to be made aware of the potentially devastating effects of birth control pills on normal hair growth. The American Hair Loss Association recommends that all women interested in using oral contraceptives for the prevention of conception should only use low-androgen index birth control pills, and if there is a strong predisposition for genetic hair loss in your family we recommend the use of another non-hormonal form of birth control. The following hormonal contraceptives have a significant potential of causing or exacerbating hair loss. more...

Birth Control Pills and Libido : Are Your Pills Hurting

So good, in fact, that Lisa and her husband that decided she needed to go back on the pill. Thirty percent of American women suffer from a diminished sex drive, and some experts (as well as non-experts) will tell you that the pill is often to blame. When you're on the pill, your hormonal balance changes — and consequently, your desire for sex might change, too. Many studies have examined the effect of hormonal birth control on sex drive, but few have been conclusive, says Anne R. Mood and partner issues, she says, "are more important than a small change in your testosterone from the pill." She argues that for many women, it's easier to blame their birth control than to examine the complicated emotional and relationship factors that could be taking a toll on their sex drives. And I think it's good to create some awareness around it, because what if it's the pill, but then you blame the relationship?" Essentially, you don't want to kick your perfectly good partner to the curb only to discover that the problem is hormonal. WHAT THEY ARE: Lybrel is the first FDA-approved no-period Pill that gives you the same amount of synthetic estrogen and progestin every day so there's no monthly "withdrawal bleed" (the period you get with regular Pills). The once-a-year-period Pills are ideal for women who experience cramping, heavy bleeding, or pain with their periods and/or for those who just think they're a drag. If you're already taking monophasic Pills (which are all the same except for during your period week), you can build a do-it-yourself Lybrel by just skipping the placebos. Also, many women feel nauseated during the first few packs of these Pills. (Actually, it's a diuretic that acts as a progestin.) It eliminates sodium from your tissues, preventing the water retention that many women swear comes with other Pills. The difference between Yaz and Yasmin: Yaz contains fewer placebos (see "Pills for Shorter Periods," next page) and slightly less estrogen. THE DOWNSIDE: The Pill doesn't counter PMS in everyone, and for some, PMS may get worse, says Minkin. PILLS FOR SHORTER PERIODS. WHAT THEY ARE: All Pill packs used to contain 21 "active" Pills and seven placebos. These Pills may be more effective at preventing pregnancy for women who forget to take their Pills on time. These Pills may also lower your risk of headaches and PMDD. THE DOWNSIDE: Yaz may cause high potassium levels, which aren't healthy for your heart (see "No-Bloat Pills," previous page). WHAT THEY ARE: They're not new, but women don't always know about Pills (including Ortho Micronor, Ovrette, and Errin) that contain no estrogen, only progestin. Best birth control for not gaining weight? – Calorie Count

What method seemed to work the best for you WITHOUT aiding weight gain?   I would just like to not start behind the 8 ball. I am curious about some of the new stuff like Seasonal/ique and Yaz. I've not had any problems with Yaz or Loestrin 24. I take Loestrin continiously and haven't had an issue, I don't see why you would bother with a pill specifically marketed as "less periods" when you can have them with any. (Even if I weren't taking it continiously, there are only four placebos instead of the normal seven for both Yaz and Loestrin.) Like you, I was looking for something that wouldn't cause me to swell, gain weight or have hormone fluctuations. I finally opted for the Mireana IUD (may have a different name in the USA) and absolutely love it. I've gained no weight that I know of, and on the rare months that I actually get a period it is brief and very light. But once I was over the first month I've had no problems since. Thanks for all the responses so far, ladies and gents! Cerazette is apparently the best mini pill on the market and I've had no problems with it, no weight gain, no crazy emotional freak outs. I am lucky that it has stopped my periods though, apparently with some people it can cause irregular periods, as with most pills the effects can be different for different people. more...

Birth control pills and weight gain - Go Ask Alice

Birth control pills and weight gain. Women often point to birth control pills as a cause of weight gain, but researchers have largely debunked this claim. In several studies , very few women gained weight as a result of using birth control pills or the patch. Women may experience a slight "water weight" gain shortly after starting the pill because birth control pills can alter your water metabolism. The estrogen in the pill can also cause weight gain due to increased breast, hip, or thigh tissue, usually after several months on the pill. Some progestin-dominant pills can cause appetite increase and permanent weight gain. Talk with your health care provider about the extra weight you've gained, and, together, you may be able to find the cause. Taking birth control certainly has pros and cons, but the idea that the pill causes women to gain weight is mostly a myth. Before ditching the pill, try talking with your health care provider about your birth control options and other explanations for your weight gain. more...

10 Birth Control Myths - Women's Health

The bottom line: Birth control will not screw with your fertility long term, says Minkin. Myth #5: Newer forms of birth control aren't as safe as the older brands. Reality: You may have heard that newer forms of birth control—like Yasmin, Yaz, or Nuva Ring—come with more hormones and more health risks than the old standbys. The truth is, the newer the birth control, the fewer hormones it contains, says Minkin. And while some studies have shown a slightly higher risk of blood clots in women taking newer forms of birth control, the increase is extremely low and still much lower than your risk of developing a clot while pregnant, says Minkin. The reason for this misconception is that some forms of the IUD (like Mirena and Para Guard) are generally recommended for women with children, since your cervix and uterus are slightly larger after giving birth, which should make implantation and use more comfortable, says Minkin. Myth #7: It's unhealthy to use birth control to skip your period. "If you are a good candidate to be on birth control in the first place—you're healthy, you don't have high blood pressure that's uncontrolled, you're not over 35 or a smoker—then you are indeed a candidate for fiddling around with your cycle," says Minkin. So if you're looking for a hormone-free birth control method, don't be swayed by the myth that condoms can kill the moment. Reality: While the Affordable Care Act is changing the way you're charged for birth control, that doesn't necessarily mean that all contraception is totally gratis all the time. Other than that, you can stay on your chosen method of birth control for as long as you want, says Minkin. more...

Best birth control for not gaining weight? - Page 2

Now that I'm older, my cycle is a little more normal and I haven't had the pill in a while. My skin was not doing too good, I felt like crap and the reason I went off it? Ok, so I have to say that I've had the same issues with birth control. I was actually pleased to see this as I felt it was obviously the culprit behind my bleeding and that now I would be fine. The nurse was NOT being a jerk about the IUD. I had to get the IUD removed, and can never get one again. I did not stop bleeding for 2 months, and it seemed as if all the blood I was losing was making me so weak I couldn't function right. I've used the Nuva Ring and thought it was really good. You insert it, leave it in for 3 weeks and the fourth week you take it out and get your period. The only "problem" I had was the first month I spotted the 2nd and 3rd week and then had my period that 4th week. While it is great in the fact that you don't have a period, or maybe a very light one, I never had one while on Depo. more...

Taking Oral Contraceptives for PCOS

There are two types of birth control pills which are based on the types of hormones present: progestin only pills and pills that are a combination of progestin and estrogen. Hormones and the Menstrual Cycle. During the menstrual cycle, estrogen is secreted by the developing egg follicle and aids in thickening of the endometrium , in preparation for a pregnancy. During a normal menstrual cycle, the endometrium, or lining of the uterus, is exposed to hormones, like estrogen and progesterone, which cause the lining to proliferate and thicken. It is that drop in progesterone levels that triggers the lining of the uterus to be shed each cycle, known as a woman's period. In PCOS, ovulation does not occur regularly, which prevents the rise and fall of progesterone which brings on a woman's period. Instead, the lining is not shed and is exposed to estrogen for a longer period of time causing the uterine lining to grow much thicker then normal.
