Ideally, the skin gradually shrinks and adjusts overall to changes in body mass. However, in some cases, people are left with a double chin or saggy skin when the skin can’t keep up with the weight loss. Other factors include your skin’s elasticity and the amount of weight you lost. The most effective way to firm up the skin is keeping it healthy. The skin is an organ, and it needs time to adjust to weight changes. According to Columbia Health, if you lose between 50 and 100 pounds rapidly, your skin is less likely to shrink in time.
“The skin tends to re-drape more favorably in the face and neck than it does in other parts of the body,” he said. Overall, nearly 200,000 people each year undergo bariatric surgery, according to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. It’s less common than body surgery, Roth says, partly because some faces adjust better — and partly because while insurers often balk at paying for body contouring, they’re even less likely to cover costs above the neck, says Roth. “For the face, it’s going to be an uphill battle,” Roth says. Brian says he’s been fighting the battle for facial surgery for years, ever since he finished losing weight after a 2006 duodenal switch, a rare form of bariatric surgery. The huge weight loss reduced his neck from 22 inches to 16 inches — and left him with hefty jowls and a wattle of flesh under his chin, all so heavy that they interfere with his speech and his hygiene, his doctor says. “What’s happening is his neck is so large because of the extra skin,” says Dr. Brian, 60, a radio announcer and PR representative, says his life is vastly improved, except for the complications caused by extra skin and drooling. Indeed, Brian says he has to keep a handkerchief available at all times and must sleep with his head face-up and completely square on his pillow to keep from soaking the bedding. Brian would like to get the problem fixed, but after paying out of pocket for most of the costs of the $40,000 weight-loss surgery, and for $30,000 in reconstructive surgery for his body, he can’t afford the additional $20,000 or so it would take to do his face. Brian has appealed the decision several times and plans to do so again.

Both infrared and laser treatments help stimulate the development of new collagen and "get heat deeply into the skin to help tighten fibrous bands," explains Dr. "Although we haven't found the perfect device for dealing with sagging skin, the technology is getting better all the time," Dr. To help improve the look of enlarged pores (and speed up skin's renewal process) at a much lower cost, ask a doctor about a prescription for Retin-A.
I lost 70 and also have the same problem and have been working so hard. I have great abs but with all the skin, you can’t even see it. I am at 160 lbs and I have the abs it is just the loose skin wont allow them to show. I only weigh 130 lbs now and so now I also have the extra skin issue. The only way to lose extra skin after weight loss without surgery is with weight lifting and a strict diet. But it is hard to enjoy it with all the loose skin I have. I am currently 19 years old and have lost roughly 20 lbs in the last 4 months. I’m 31 years old and 5′ 3 1/2″ tall and I struggled with my weight for the last 13 years. I went to the gym for 18 months and only lost 20 pounds. I’m 21 and still have some extra skin. I lost 55 lbs., two years ago and have been trying to shrink the excess skin around my waist on and off for the last year, but faithfully for the last 3 months. Even though I lost the weight fast, I still exercise everyday to try and tighten the loose skin on my stomach.

Skin is an organ — our largest one — made up of collagen and elastin, among other components. Lahijani adds collagen and elastin are fibres that make up the supporting structure of our skin. "Collagen gives skin its firmness, while elastin keeps skin tight.” But over time, and with damage such as sun exposure, our skin loses these fibres. "Unfortunately, there is very limited ability for the skin to tighten as weight is lost." This also means not everyone's experience with excess skin is the same. "While there are lots of collagen and elastin creams available, these molecules are far too large to penetrate the skin,” says cosmetic surgeon Dr. "When it comes to dealing with loose skin, treatment options can vary based on the amount of excess skin that is present,” says Dr. "If an individual has a small amount of loose skin, doctors can use a radio frequency laser, ultrasound laser or fractional laser to target and help firm up the skin.” “When it comes to significant/massive weight loss there just is not any other method other than surgery to cut out the excess skin,” Lahijani says. Sterry listed tummy tucks, lower body lifts (a tummy tuck combined with an outer thigh and buttock lift), arm lifts, breast lifts, and thigh lifts as some of the procedures he uses to treat loose skin. The amount of scaring depends on factors like the location of the surgery, the amount of skin removed, and your own personal genetics. There are laser treatments that can make a big difference, Lahijani says, and tattooing over your skin is another option.
How to Lose Weight Without Sagging Skin. Sagging skin can be a serious physical and cosmetic problem after significant weight loss. Whether or not sagging skin happens depends on how much weight you have to lose, your age at the time of weight loss and how quickly you've lost it. You can minimize the amount of sagging skin you develop with certain weight-loss strategies, but some loose skin is inevitable with extreme weight loss. Skin sagging almost inevitably occurs when you lose a large amount of weight quickly, such as with bariatric surgery or a medically prescribed, very-low-calorie diet. The compounds that help promote skin elasticity - elastin and collagen - become stressed in the process of extreme weight loss. When you repeatedly stress the skin with quick weight loss and gain it back, your skin's elasticity wears out and eventually, can't bounce back. Choose healthy, whole foods so you lose weight once and for the long-term.

This is an issue that Kelly Coffey , a personal trainer who lost 160 pounds, has personal experience with: She was shocked at both the appearance of her now-trim body and how she felt about it when she first lost the weight. How loose your skin gets after losing weight depends on several factors: how much weight you've lost, how old you were when you lost the weight, how many times you've lost and gained the weight back, and how quickly you lost it (the faster you lose it, the less time your skin has to tighten naturally). It made her stronger and helped her appreciate the abilities of her body. "It’s hard to have a problem with a body that's capable of taking on the challenges you put it through," she says. And at the end of the day, your body doesn't have to be the spitting image of a celeb's to be healthy—and look amazing. When you have a negative thought about the way your post-weight loss body looks, Coffey recommends doing a "caring action" like talking with a loved one on the phone, going on a walk outside, or meditating . "When you answer those negative thoughts with caring actions, the care starts to beat out that negative mentality." Buy Clothes that Fit Your New Body. Finding your own style by shopping for clothes that suit your body type helps you accept your new body and take pride in how you present yourself to the world, says Coffey. Spending time with your significant other, family, and friends who recognize all the hard work you put into your weight-loss journey will help reinforce all of the amazing progress you've made, says Coffey. This is especially helpful when you aren't able to see for yourself how amazing your new body is.

Losing weight is a great accomplishment, however if you are extremely overweight or obese, you may have an excessive amount of skin left over after your weight loss. In cases of flabby neck skin, you should understand the causes and options for treatment that are available to you. As you lose weight, the fat beneath your skin will be diminished. However, this is not only a problem for those that are older or middle aged, if you are extremely obese and lost a large amount of weight, even at age 18 you can have left over sagging skin in the neck area. If you are excessively obese, and then lose a significant amount of weight, you are likely to have extra skin folds in the neck area. This is due to the fact that as you gain weight, your skin will stretch to accommodate this new fat. However, when you lose weight, the skin has nowhere to go, which means that it will begin to fold and sag on the neck, causing big sources of embarrassment for some people. If you lose a significant amount of weight and are left with folds of skin on your neck , there are some treatment options that you can consider. However, if you do lose a substantial amount of weight and have excessive skin, it is important to discuss the options that you have with a doctor or plastic surgeon. This will help you remove the excessive skin and have the firm, tight neck skin you once did.

After losing half her body weight, Karen Hogan was left with sagging skin, deep lines and droopy eyes. The downside of weight-loss: Karen was left with sagging skin, deep lines and droopy eyes. But the rapid weight loss combined with lack of exercise (due to obesity-related osteoarthritis) left me with an unnaturally aged face, complete with sagging skin, deep lines and droopy eyes. Painful procedure: Karen was left with badly bruised eyes and a swollen face post-surgery.but the results have been worth it, she says. And I had the support – emotionally and financially – of my family, who saw me struggling with a face which, although slimmer, I could not learn to love. I have blood pressure issues, and needed the reassurance that if any complications arose I would be properly cared for. Eventually I met Mr Alex Karidis at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in London. The difference was dramatic and I glimpsed the pre-obese, happier Karen. He would remove the sagging skin around my eyes, chin and neck where turkey-wattle folds hung. But I knew that I was in good hands and, towards the end of last year, I submitted to the knife. Five weeks on, I still had some light bruising but was thrilled with the newly defined shape of my neck and chin. At last I could smile naturally and feel the real me shining through. After 30 years of not leaving the house without being caked in make-up, I dash out now with just a touch of lippie and mascara. All I know for sure is that I am going to maintain my healthy weight, enjoy my face and greet the world with a natural smile and joy of life.
Home » Blog » Often Overlooked Touch-Up After Weight Loss: Sagging Facial Skin. Often Overlooked Touch-Up After Weight Loss: Sagging Facial Skin. One of the most common is stretched and sagging skin. Of course, the health benefits of their weight loss far exceed the concerns over sagging skin, so this is no reason to avoid weight loss. But, for those hoping to look their best and make the most of their weight loss, there is a solution. Facelifts may be appropriate for other conditions, as well, and sagging skin after weight loss is one of them. Those who have experienced rapid weight loss often see sagging skin under their necks and skin that seems to sag, particularly along the jaw line.
For some patients with good skin tone but poor definition at the angle of the neck, I add a suture-suspension necklift to sharpen the angle between the jawline and neck. Patients with more advanced aging changes in the neck generally require tightening of their neck skin as well. If the incisions are created and closed correctly and without undue tension, a very natural looking result can be obtained with no obvious signs that a necklift has been performed. Turkey Gobbler and Neck Lift. Droopy neck skin is one of the signs of aging that usually begins appearing in the 50s for most people. It's not only skin, but usually bands of the platysma muscle that droop and have muscle spasm. If you are an older male there is the option of a direct neck lift which provides dramatic results but does leave an incision line from your chin to your "Adam's apple." Not good for some, perfect for others seeking a shorter surgical procedure with dramatic results. Assuming that you are female the surgery choices include a necklift alone (skin and muscle tightening with most of the lifting shifting skin behind your ears, or a combined facelift and necklift. The benefit of the latter (more extensive surgery) is improvement of jowls and the cheek area where fat and skin settle in the 50s+ and more lifting and tightening of the neck skin. There are many options to correct sagging neck skin. With your non-surgical options, it all depends on the severity of the laxity that you have. A face lift can remove the excess skin from the neck area giving you a smooth neck and better jaw line. In most cases a face/ neck lift can be performed with little downtime, minimal scaring and can get you very natural, but effective results. Unfortunately there are no good, non-surgical options to remove the “turkey neck”. A face/ neck lift is the recommended procedure for this issue.
As your body adapts to the added resistance it produces more collagen, which helps to tighten the skin. The more nutrients your body gets (from healthy, natural foods) the more toned, clear, and resilient the skin will be. Once patients begin losing weight, they will notice that while the fat melts away, the skin doesn't. Like a deflated balloon, they are left with large areas of sagging skin and no way to get the skin back into its original position. Once stretched out, the skin will eventually lose its elasticity. A patient who has lost a massive amount of weight will have sagging skin all over the body. For many, the trade-off between the removal of massive amount of skin and permanent scars is a worthy exchange. For this reason, patients who have endured massive weight loss are often the most satisfied plastic surgery patients.
The cleansing of the skin will strengthen its elasticity and prevent sagging. The most effective will be one that contains ceremides, peptides and collagen boosters. Splurge on a good night cream too, as they are heavier in texture, and generally more rich and active on the skin. THE ESTHETICIAN: Sagging skin is caused by chronic dehydration. THE SURGEON: If you are faced with sagging skin that is beyond moisturizer, sometimes a more aggressive approach, such as a facelift, may be needed to fix the problem. A facelift (rhytidectomy) or a mini facelift provides significant improvement to the aging face by eliminating excess skin and tightening facial muscles that have lost their tone and elasticity.
Surgical Neck lift* with a lower facelift would be the gold standard and get you the best results. Surgical Neck lift* would be the next best procedure. *It is important the a Neck lift involves some liposuction and importantly a platysmaplasty which is a procedure that tightens the underlying loose neck muscles. Most individuals who lose significant amount of weight in a short period of time have considerable amounts of skin excess in the neck that do not respond to these modalities. Bio Oil and Massage will not help your neck appearance. Depending on the degree of excess neck skin will determine the best approach ranging from a modified facelift (mini lift), neck lift only to a full traditional facelift with or without platysmal plication. For most I have been able to use a mini lift such as the MACS lift, Lite Lift and others will improve both the lower face(jawline) as well as the neck. A necklift mainly focuses on the neck. An exam is always needed to determine how the specific causes of your undesired neck appearance. The amount of redundant skin, excess fat below the chin, (requires neck or facelift) For example, excess fat requires direct removal or liposuction (more common), widely spread playtsmal bands are brought together (neck tightening), and excess skin is removed with a lower facelift or neck lift (this can be done with minimal scars). A neck lift is able to remove fat both above and below the platysmal muscle and tighten it; this will give a more defined jaw/neck line. The lax skin in your upper neck can be approached directly by a less invasive facelift in the mini-face lift such as the MAC or Lite Lift procedures. The least invasive would be one of these procedures which corrects the upper neck loose skin extremely well.

Skin that has lost its spring isn't the result of just one cause. The most common cause of sagging skin is aging. The sun's powerful rays damage skin cells which, over time, this can increase the effects of aging [source: Mayo Clinic ]. It's a double-edged sword - all that ultraviolet radiation you soaked up while getting the perfect tan was also breaking down your collagen and elastin, which can lead to saggy skin and wrinkles [source: Mayo Clinic ]. In addition to its other negative health effects, smoking can also contribute to sagging skin. Smoking dries out your skin and has been shown to increase effects of premature aging, leaving you with lines, wrinkles and loss of skin tone way before your time [source: Aging Skin Net ].
The skin is not so much "loose" as it is flabby due to excess body fat. However, let's say not all of the weight you lose is body fat. And, because muscle can rapidly dehydrate and sacrifice protein to provide an additional supply of energy to your body, muscle loss increases the more active you are on a severe diet. You have 20 fewer pounds of muscle on your body, and 20 more pounds of body fat, even though you weigh as much as you did before you put on the extra weight! To eliminate and prevent the droopy appearance of the remnants of excess body fat during and following weight loss, without resorting to surgical procedures, you must change your body composition, not just lose bodyweight. That means paying particular attention to the ratio of your body fat to muscle, or lean body mass. The Body Fat Guide will show you exactly how to do it. In the meantime, fat loss continues as your body becomes flabbier with loose skin. To monitor and modify your energy balance, see The Body Fat Guide . See The Body Fat Guide to monitor changes in your lean body mass and body fat levels. Keeping track of changes in your body composition using The Body Fat Guide allows you to see how much muscle you are losing on a diet, and more importantly, it allows you to make calorie intake changes to prevent or replenish that loss. For example, if you start your diet at 220 pounds with 34% body fat and end at 135 pounds with 18% body fat, you might expect to look toned and trim after having lost 85 pounds of bodyweight and reducing your body fat percentage almost in half, but The Body Fat Guide will show you that you will have also lost 35 pounds of muscle in the process, and you will probably have plenty of flabby skin as a result! If you don't want this to happen to you, use The Body Fat Guide regularly to measure changes in your body fat and muscle levels and adjust your diet until you get perfect results! More importantly, by monitoring changes in your muscle and body fat levels, something the scale alone can't do, and by modifying your calorie intake to avoid cutting calories too drastically, you will maintain your lean body mass and prevent loose skin.
Although you cannot turn back the hands of time, you can be proactive and try different home and medical treatments to tighten your loosening neck skin. Exercise your facial and neck muscles. As your skin loses elasticity over time, it can no longer fill this grove and may cause a permanent wrinkle or flap on your neck. There are many products that can not only boost collagen and elastin production, but may also improve the appearance of your neck skin my plumping it up with products such as silicone and hyaluronic acid. Weight gain can cause your skin to stretch and will leave you with looser skin if you lose the weight. Administering a topical retinoid that your doctor prescribes may help improve the appearance of your neck skin and help improve its elasticity. Be aware that these are not as powerful as prescription retinoids and may not improve your skin over the long term. Retinoids can cause redness, dryness, and burning on your skin. Chemical peels, dermabrasion and microdermabrasion remove the outer layer of your skin and may help not only improve elasticity, but also appearance. This will stimulate the production of a new layer of skin, which may make your neck skin firmer. Have these injected into your neck area to help plump up and firm your neck skin.
A Quick Lift® mini face lift offers an alternative for skin tightening to remove excess skin after weight loss. (PITTSBURGH – November 18, 2011) – For individuals who have lost large amounts of weight through diet or bariatric procedures such as gastric bypass surgery, the sagging skin that remains after the body has reshaped itself can be physically uncomfortable and emotionally distressing. Following a 150-pound weight loss achieved through gastric bypass surgery and maintained for more than 10 years, Roseanna Andres, 61, of West Mifflin, was enjoying her improved health, but was bothered by the sagging skin that remained along her chin, face and neck. I did quite a bit of research on cosmetic surgery for skin tightening after weight loss, and chose the Quick Lift after seeing the results achieved with other clients.” Roseanna Andres’ Quick Lift procedure was performed by Dominic Brandy MD , medical director and founder of The Skin Center Medical Spa , and developer of the Quick Lift. The body may be lighter, but it’s now weighed down with folds of sagging skin, causing a wild amount of emotional and physical (think: chafing) pain. More extreme weight-loss patients are choosing to remove the loose skin through cosmetic surgery, and a recent study showed that the bodies and minds of those who do end up faring much better. Franklin Santana, a 29-year-old who lives in the Bronx, had gastric bypass surgery in October 2011, and before the surgery, he weighed 395 pounds. And then, at the end of October, it’s all sad and saggy and deflated. Fantana had done his research before getting the surgery done, and he knew that he’d probably be saddled with “loose skin” after it was over. "I was not really comfortable even looking at myself in the mirror, with all the excess flesh," said Olmstead, who lives in New York state and had cosmetic surgery in Manhattan, led by Wallach, to remove the sagging skin in 2004. It can happen when the weight is lost through diet and exercise, but it happens more often to weight-loss surgery patients. The most effective way to remove the excess skin is through cosmetic surgery, in one or more of an array of procedures known as body contouring. And those who do shed the extra skin generally fare better than those who don’t, both psychologically and physiologically. People who had weight-loss surgery, and subsequently had the excess skin removed, were less likely to gain weight back than those who had the surgery but did not undergo a body contouring procedure, according to a recent study published in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Those who did not have any cosmetic procedures to remove the resulting excess skin ended up gaining back about 50 pounds, but those who did have body contouring done only gained back about 13 pounds. After the body contouring is done, patients routinely lose another 10 to 15 pounds of loose skin alone. He had body contouring done this winter, and his insurance covered the procedure. Stopping the painful chafing is important, and such a relief, say people who’ve had body contouring done. Franklin and Maldonado both had body lifts done by Glasberg over the holidays.
Anyway, I started using the Somaluxe Firming Lotion to combat loose skin, and its really effective. I feel the "loose skin" around my stomach and feel the love handles. I can feel the thickness and jiggliness of the fat. I gain and lose the same couple pounds back and forth. I would like to lose the next 10 pounds fast and the last 10 slow, so I can get rid of some flab. I'm having a problem, I have a pot belly stomach and really lower belly fat that flabs and have stretch marks, I want to work on that more so I don't get that loose skin! I'm 5'5 and over the last year and a half have lost about 53lbs. However when I lie on my side, or bend over I have the appearance of loose skin in my tummy area - it looks like thin wrinkly skin, and will also fold over. Just keep losing weight and as you lose more the loose skin or really the loose fat will go away. I'm 18 and weigh 137 (I'm 5'3) I want to loose about 20 pounds. Point of the story I was left with what you call loose fat and a "mommy pouch". But I don't know what to do to get rid of the pouch and the little bit of loose fat.
