In this post I’ll try to outline a few opinions about keeping a raw food diet, share some of the side effects, and put together some of the most important benefits. After the 3rd month the weight loss seemed to stop (I didn’t include the last week in the chart, but during this week my weight was constantly between 79 and 81 kilos, regardless of what and how I would eat) Never managed to have it completely solid, but the taste was delicious (and I know I’m repeating myself). But the most interesting thing I managed to cook – I admit, totally by chance – was something that was surprisingly resembling to chopped meat and I even wrote a full post about how to make fake meat on a raw food diet. Eating raw food is a matter of picking a veggie salad at the restaurant and don’t even try to talk about your eating habits. It seems that every fall I was used to eat more meat and my body is trying to tell me that in very clear way. My biological response to the raw food diet is fantastic and my health is better and better, but the memories in my body are trying to put me back on a track I don’t really want to. And it is telling me: “ok, I know we’re playing some game for the last two and a half month, but it’s time to cut the silly salads out of the menu and give something really solid to eat…” But in the last 2 days there have been some pretty big changes and some of them involved my eating habits. I didn’t do much to harm myself or the others around me, I usually isolate during these times, but I did something very unusual: I ate meat and cooked food. It was only two or three meals involving meat and it was a very deep drive to do this. I still don’t like the taste of cooked food or meat and I feel like it was something necessary for a very deep emotional healing process. But I know there’s a reason for that and I know that in the last few months I’ve been making enormous progress in this direction.

When I was 15 I started my battle with weight and overeating, a battle that raged continuously for 11 years! My Father, who was overweight and a very disciplined concert pianist, told me to give up, that I was going to drive myself around the bend. I was going to vanquish the forces within me that sought my destruction. Storm (now also known as "Nutman") was also in the music program and we met in the practice rooms and started playing music together. He was captain of the fencing team and he was on crew, and also took jazz dance and tennis. I was stunned and appalled when I learned that this man, who I thought was in his 20's, was 47 years old! I was feeling really good and loosing weight, but then I started to get sick. One night, at the worst point of all this, I was vomiting, shaking and very frightened. It was like I had passed through some invisible barrier, and had come out on the other side! I was completely in touch with the sensuous universe. The pleasure of it was so intense that the cravings that would soon resurface had very little power. I was glowing and high with energy. This is the final postmortem of my 30 day trial of the low-fat raw food diet, which I conducted from January 1 to January 30, 2008. For example, on the first day of the trial I ate 8-1/2 pounds of food, and I was 2.8 pounds lighter on the scale the next morning. The cravings for cooked food on this diet were strong some days and virtually nonexistent on other days. For the first half of the trial, I averaged 12.2% of calories from fat. For the second half of the trial, I averaged 8.7% of calories from fat. My average body temperature during the first week of the trial was 98.5°. During the second week of the trial, it was 98.2°. For fifteen years, I tried every diet out there, I exercised my heart out, and all that would ever happen was I would lose about 10 pounds of water, then slowly gain more weight as I increased my exercise. In May of 2005, I was sitting at home contemplating the probability that I would never lose the weight and be morbidly obese the rest of my life. I won't lie and say there hasn't been times when eating only raw food was hard. That's what raw food can do for you. And when you are done losing weight, and you are no longer suffer from morbid obesity, you won't have to worry about gaining it back because raw food gets to you. And if by chance you don't maintain a raw food lifestyle after you lose the weight and you gain some back, all won't be lost. Daily Meal Plans for a Raw Food Weight Loss Diet. Going on a raw food diet can be a challenge if you enjoy cooking or eat a lot of processed, prepared and restaurant food. In most cases, raw foods are lower in fat and calories than cooked alternatives, so they can certainly help you lose weight. Raw foodists do not eat any foods that have been cooked and typically do not eat anything that has been heated to a temperature past about 115 degrees Fahrenheit. For reasons of food safety as well as health, a raw food diet is usually synonymous with a raw vegan diet, meaning that it eschews all meat and animal products. Raw foodists believe they get more vitamins, minerals and beneficial compounds from uncooked foods because they do not destroy enzymes in the cooking process.
The End of the 30 Day Raw Food Bread Fast Experiment. In fact, this is also true of the day after my 30 day goal was reached: since that turned out to be a fast day for me, this 30 day experiment is actually a 31 day experiment. And since I'm not eating enough calories while eating only raw foods, I conclude that this would be difficult for me on a raw diet. Joe Cross (of movie "Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead" fame) called his 60 day juice fast a "reboot." It occurred to me, while on this raw diet for 30 days that I was also "rebooting" - in the sense that I was regressing to an infantile dietary stage. One day I ate more bananas than anything else - because they were on sale, and getting soft, I got 2 large bags of bananas for $2, and that day and the next I ate almost nothing but bananas. And what is the first solid food we give to babies? I think the more realistic plan would be to continue the no-grain thing for another 30 days, and see how that goes. It is the things that we associate and combine with bread that are fattening - and addictive - not so much bread itself. And this may be true because the result of the 30-day diet is an inordinate amount of stress that I've subjected myself to. Now I doubt very much that this stress is due to the diet of raw fruits and vegetables itself, but is more likely to be the result of not getting enough calories, and thus living off my stores of fat and protein. (Since the mustard greens were somewhat peppery I didn't juice all of them, and ended up eating about 3 of them in the salad, since I didn't think my wife would like too many in the juice; we shared this juice, and there was enough for us both to have a glass for breakfast, and enough to refrigerate for me to have some later in the day)
Breakfast should be the heaviest meal of the day, full of greens, salads, sprouts and vegetables. Try to eat between 7 and 9 am. Mix berries and oats with 150ml water. At breakfast add the almonds and a pinch of salt. Add a sprinkle of blanched whole almonds and a drizzle of raw honey. 2 ripe bananas, sliced and sprinkled with lemon juice. 2 kiwis, peeled and sliced. Add oats, goji berries and vanilla pod. This should really be the heaviest meal of the day, with lots of greens, salads, sprouts and vegetables. Don't drink it all in the morning and none in the afternoon. Process the almonds, apricots and dates in a food processor using the "s" blade.
The top or first picture was taken when I was on about a 75% raw diet. This is a normal process for people on a 100% raw food diet. The body removes fat and other toxins as part of the healing process on raw foods. My body has adjusted and I am now eating at least 25% less calories per day than when I first started the 100% raw food diet. I can honestly say I enjoy eating this way and that I don't feel deprived in the least. Simply stated the raw food diet revolutionized my life. When you have a dehydrator, for example, one of the best things you can do is to soak and dehydrate your nuts, which will increase their shelf-life, and they'll be ready to eat so you don't have to wait around for soaking when you want some nuts or seeds. The exception to this is if you're making a recipe that calls for soaked nuts/seeds, then you have to re-soak them. Warm your soup or sauce a little on the stove, but only to a temperature that you can still put your finger in it and keep it there. You can put food in for about 30-60 minutes at 130 degrees and not worry about compromising the integrity of the enzymes.
