I got a call at work today that Myra was sick and I would need to pick her up. I changed into my workout clothes and started the DVD. Initially I was going to do level 3 and then I figured I better check myself - these have a reputation for being kick-butt and this is a recovery week so I settled on level 2. This is part of the warm-up. She has you get in this squat position and hold it for what seems like forever while you do shoulder presses. I enjoyed the pushups and the planks and all the other fun stuff she throws at you. I watched level 3 after I was done and I think if I were looking for a more intense workout I'd do level 2 followed by level 3 (skipping the cool-down at the end of level 2 of course). I had a couple of complaints, the main one being that Jillian will stop what she's doing to point out how the others are doing the exercise, but she gives no warning and a couple times I thought she was stopping because we were changing exercises. If I know I'm doing 15 I'll focus on that and it helps a lot. Finally, the cool-down stretching was really skimpy but what can you do in 2 minutes? But the workout itself was plenty tough - I was sweating like crazy at one point and had to stop and breathe sometimes - I couldn't keep up! So, what about the hit and miss reviews I have been reading on the internet? The real reason though, was that I found them too difficult and taxing. With all those sore muscles, it was tough getting in the pose, but I felt really energized, and decided to give this program another try. The workout is divided into three levels – level 1, 2, and 3 – 10 day each, though there was no schedule or calendar provided with it. May be because I was doing it just for the heck of it, and had no fitness goals to achieve as such. The experience was good all over, filled with sour and not-so-sour moments. And one does tend to get bored doing all the same moves everyday for weeks. You can figure out why I did not enjoy the program as much as my friend did, who was all raving about it. You can make all the mistakes you want, and not feel the same pressure you would in a classroom filled with other people who seem to “get” the routine much faster than you. Here are my five favorite Jillian DVD’s for weight loss and strength. Personally I feel that you can stretch this out over longer than a month and see better results, because your form on each level will improve the more you do it. She does her 3-2-1 interval system in this DVD, which is 3 minutes of cardio, 2 minutes of strength and 1 minute of abs. I couldn’t walk properly for two days after the first time I did this DVD. There are three workout levels on this DVD, so if the first is too easy for you, you can move up at your own pace. There are two workout levels on this DVD. I’ve been using this DVD for years, and still find the workouts to be effective. Hard Body: This DVD takes you to a new level with the workouts lasting 45 minutes instead of the typical 20-30 minute workouts on her other DVD’s. I actually first started doing this workout when I had made the decision that I wanted to get fit and healthy. It's also excellent that this workout has different difficulty levels, by the the time you get to level three you feel so proud to how far that you have come and yes you do look shreded (toned). Jillian is very motivating in this workout and supportive. I now do this workout combined with No More Trouble Zomes (Jillian Michaels) and I have never felt so toned and my fitness levels have improved so much. So if you have only a limited amount of time to workout and/or just starting out on your new lifestyle then I strongly recommend this :) Simple and efficient workout (Level 1) This makes a very efficient workout, and it's over before you know it - yet you finish feeling like you've accomplished something. The 30 Day Shred is a 20-minute workout that combines cardio with strength training and moves through three different levels of difficulty. You don’t need any specialist equipment, and there doesn’t seem to be any crazy diet that goes with it, though the lovely lady (Jillian Michaels) does seem to refer to a diet in her commentary. You’d think that twenty minutes of exercise done in your living room would be a total waste of time, and I’m one of the most sceptical people I know, but I can tell you that in this case it really isn’t. I think you can actually watch this programme on Youtube now, which is free, but I like having the DVD so that I can watch it on the big telly in the living room. You don’t have to leave the house, so it’s not sociable at all. To be fair, if you’ve done exercise classes before – things like Body Conditioning or Body Pump – then you should be pretty au fait with form and posture when you’re lifting weights; but if you’re a total beginner then you need to listen really carefully to the commentary to make sure that you’re doing things correctly. It’s important to watch how the models are demonstrating the moves and to listen when Jillian describes how your back should be positioned or how you do squats properly.
