The GF diet is NOT a healthy method of weight loss and is only necessary for those who actually cannot eat gluten. If this is so, and especially if you have CD, you ABSOULTELY must stay on the gluten free diet! But if you stick to the diet you will feel 100% better and eventually will lose weight. As for whether a GF diet can help you lose weight, it's impossible to say. If you want to lose 20lb in 3 months, the way to do it is to stick to a well balanced diet. March 25th I started the gluten-free diet and believe that I haven't eaten gluten since. I am 27 years old, 6' 2" and have weighed about 137 pounds since I was 16. I was hoping to gain weight now that I got off gluten and hopefully healing that digestive tract. But I didn't think anything of it until yesterday(2 months and a week into the diet) and I weighed 130 pounds. I've lost 7 pounds in the last 2 months, which may not sound like a lot but 130 pounds for a 6' 2" guy is pretty skinny and I'm worried that I might lose more. I am another skinny Celiac and was down to 94 pounds at diagnosis. You are 27 years old and your metabolism is faster than those of us who are older so that may account for some of the weight issues. I was skinny my entire life and, like you, and could not gain anything. You need to be eating a lot and often because it will take a lot of calories to get your weight up right now. Eat the stuff that appeals to you. Bread also makes my weight stable and I can give you recommendations for good, certified gluten-free bread that is delicious. You have only been diagnosed for 2 months and it is going to take a lot longer for your health and weight to come back. 10 pounds is a lot of weight for you to try and gain in 2 months. You might not do so well without the gluten-free grains and if you buy from a reputable company, preferably with a dedicated facility, you should have no issues with them. You can't gain without carbs so please include these in your diet and don't worry.

Given these facts, it’s important for patients’ success to teach them how to maintain a healthful weight after switching to a gluten-free diet. Discouragement as a result of gaining weight is a common reason many patients stop following the diet. “It’s so important to prepare the patient for that almost-inevitable weight gain,” Jones says. While weight gain can be uncomfortable for most people, it means they’re doing pretty well on the new diet. Begun adds that a diet rich in highly processed gluten-free foods isn’t ideal for either healing the body or achieving a healthful weight. “Nutrient deficiencies also are common with a celiac diagnosis, so patients need to work with a dietitian to tailor a diet rich in the nutrients their body is lacking,” she says. “It’s not uncommon for patients to get frustrated if they’re not losing weight fast enough, so they definitely need encouragement—particularly so that they stick with the diet.”
We all know that the gluten-free diet is not a weight loss fad diet regardless of what some people in the media report. But I’ve figured out that that one can lose weight while on the diet. Some of us just have to greatly limit our intake of gluten-free replacement items in order to do it. One gluten-free specialty item that greatly aids in weight loss is (certified gluten-free) oats. It’s possible to eat gluten-free replacement items as a regular part a normal, healthy diet and maintain one’s weight, but the same can’t be said for some of us when working to shed unwanted pounds. The truth is that many delicious replacement food items out there are often times higher in calories, fat and sugar then the items they were mean to replace. Adopting the gluten-free diet is not an easy change. If products state that they are "gluten-free", it means that the manufacturer guarantees that there is no gluten in that food item. If you have not been diagnosed with celiac disease, it is not recommended that you follow a gluten-free diet.
