I was eating fattening foods (hello, nachos and beer!) and skipping my workouts at the gym, but I didn’t know where to start with losing weight. It made keeping track of what I was eating easy—for the most part. Even though the serving size on these containers was clearly marked, I didn’t know if I was eating what was considered a serving. Eventually, I realized I wasn’t being completely honest with my weight-loss efforts, and I started to pay more attention to serving sizes with the help of measuring cups and spoons. Same goes for the peanut butter I was adding to my morning toast. Instead of overestimating, I keep my measuring cups and spoons in my prep area to help me with my portion sizes. I used to use a small cup to scoop my rolled oats from the canister, but the heaping portion was many more calories than a single serving. Now I use a 1/2 cup measuring cup to scoop my rolled oats, and I make sure to level-off them off for the perfect portion of oatmeal. “What you need to do is get that tape measure out, and start measuring that gut. Then you start working out and you start eating properly til that gut gets down close to it was when you were in your twenties. For most of the people I work with, measuring food is a key component of achieving their fitness goals. It is my belief that we should get the majority of our nutrients from food. I get that sometimes it’s hard to do given caloric restrictions and the quality of food available, but that is my preference because I don’t think it’s just vitamin C tablet but the entire orange that should be consumed for all of it’s benefits (water, fiber, folate, potassium, magnesium, and other trace vitamins and minerals). You can also track your activity for the day with another large database of sports, home, leisure, and office-based movement with varying intensity. An online journal allows you to write about your progress and another tab allows you to track your body measurements and even your moods (which I believe is extremely helpful when it comes to stress-eaters). Another client recently introduced me to CRON-O-Meter which DOES include both Apple and Android apps for easy recording throughout the day. Whatever application you use, be sure that the calorie counter includes vitamin and mineral breakdowns in your food as well. Hectic schedules and full-time jobs don’t have to get in the way of your weight loss. Obviously, my schedule was a challenge, but I knew if I started to make excuses, I’d never lose the weight, so I toughened up and created a fail-proof plan that helped me drop more than 20 pounds. Working out first thing in the morning guaranteed that I fit it in before my day got carried away and excuses popped up. In the past, I halfheartedly kept a paper-and-pen food journal, but it was time-consuming and inconvenient to calculate all of those calories, so hundreds of them often went unaccounted for each day. Lunch could be leftovers from the previous night’s dinner or a turkey sandwich on whole wheat bread with veggies and honey mustard. Plus, once I bought the food and had it readily available in my kitchen, I had no excuse for not packing a nutritious lunch. Whenever I wanted a snack, it was the first thing I saw, so I was able to keep my munchies light and nutritious. If getting to the gym was difficult or interfered with my work schedule, I knew I’d never go, so I joined a gym close to work. Having everything that I needed for a workout already at the gym kept me from making excuses and helped me stick to an almost-daily sweat schedule.
