How I Lost Weight Eating Real Food More Than Ever

These are a fun, sporty pair of pants from the Gap that I’ve had for a number of years. And realizing how big these pants are now confirmed to me that this time I’ve reached a new milestone – this is real weight loss that works in real life with real food. Just right for me and where my body wants to be- when it’s being fed real food. I plan to do another post with more detail and showing what these portions look like, but suffice it to say that my portion sizes had crept up over the years and needed to be cut back. And it’s still easy- but eating smaller portions is a lifestyle change that I have to keep up because TV, magazines, blogs, and restaurants constantly skew the portions to bigger amounts. I’ve moved to more and more whole foods over the life of this blog, including whole milk and cream, cheeses, and eggs (of course, vegetables and fruits are part of this, too, but that’s not the different part {smile}) and I lost weight eating these foods. BUT- I was eating these foods a year ago when I was at a weight I wasn’t comfortable with, so this alone won’t help you lose weight. I’ve developed some habits that work for me- things I either really thought about or that have developed over the last year and work well towards losing weight and keeping it off. In fact, I believe that adopting these techniques (or similar ones that work for you) are so important to making healthy lifestyle changes that are sustainable that I’m going into detail in the next installment of Losing Weight With Real, Whole Foods: Tips, Tricks, and Techniques to Help You Lose Weight. What would you add to the list that has worked for you? more...

Foods not to Eat When Losing Weight

Losing weight and keeping it off is not easy, especially when you consume foods that are high in calories or fat or that contain substances that stimulate your appetite. Consuming unhealthy fats not only may increase your body fat and weight, but it may also elevate your risk of chronic diseases. Consuming saturated fat, found in red meat, pork, poultry and dairy, may elevate your blood cholesterol levels and increase your risk of heart disease. Consuming refined grains, such as white bread and white rice, can inhibit your ability to lose weight and increase your risk of disease. Excess blood sugar can turn to fat, get stored in fat cells and increase your body fat. Sweetened foods and beverages with sugar or high-fructose corn syrup can compromise your weight loss effort and may even increase your risk of weight gain and Type 2 diabetes. Consuming high-fructose corn syrup may also increase your risk of fat gain and obesity. Eating foods cooked at high temperatures by frying, baking and roasting causes the formation of acrylamide, a substance that can increase your risk of cancer. 8 Foods You Should Never Eat if You’re

When you eat crackers, dry cereal, bread, or rice cakes alone, your body converts the carbs to simple sugars, and sends it directly into your blood stream. The problem: You end up with low blood sugar and the same hunger pangs that led you to carb it up in the first place. The point is that snacks containing a combination of carbs, healthy fats, and protein take longer to digest, and will, therefore, tide you over for longer. Yes, everyone needs fiber — it keeps your digestive system churning and keeps you feeling full, even when you're cutting back on calories. The problem (besides overeating, which can thwart your weight loss goals fast) is that when food makers remove fat from food, they inevitably remove some of the flavor. To compensate, they often add sugar, which makes the product even worse for you. It takes several oranges to make one 6-ounce glass of OJ, but when you drink juice, you consume all the calories from those oranges without the natural fruit fibers that fill you up. Another thing: Fructose, the natural fruit sugar that makes fruit and fruit juice taste sweet, tricks your body into gaining weight by blunting your body's ability to recognize when it's full, says Melissa Rifkin, a registered dietitian at Montefiore Medical Center in New York and a Rise nutrition coach. This makes you eat more, and increases your risk of developing insulin resistance and diabetes. The same goes for food you buy on sale: you're more likely to consume more when food costs less, according to another study . That's not to say you should spend more on food to eat less overall — it's unsustainable (and silly). It contains empty calories that don't fill you up or provide any nutrients; softens your resolve so you're more likely to overeat; and impairs your judgement, regardless of your weight loss goals. (It's why you drunk eat pizza, not salad.) But it gets worse: "When alcohol is present in your body, it's considered a toxin that your body wants to get rid of, and becomes you liver's top priority," says Dr. more...
