Having launched the initiative, in collaboration with Dubai Multi Commodities Centre, DMCC, Dubai Gold and Jewellery Group, DGJG and GOLD.ae, Hussain Nasser Lootah, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, said that this year DM is launching the same initiative as last year but with a small change in its concept and name, which is now ‘Your Child In Gold’, with the aim of spreading awareness of the necessity of adopting a healthy life style among all members of a family by practicing regular physical exercises to stay fit. Hundreds of Dubai residents with their children rushed to five major parks in Dubai to register for the recently launched ‘Your Child in Gold’ initiative by the Dubai Municipality as onsite registration started on Tuesday night. Onsite registration in five locations reached 1,362 participants on the first day, out of which 219 registered as family including children. Online registration totaled 9,219 so far, out of which 1,391 (15 per cent) are members of 384 families, the Municipality said on Wednesday. Interestingly, more than 64 per cent of the people who have registered online for the slimming programme that rewards people with gold are from India, where the possession of yellow metal is held in high esteem. Lootah said this is the continuation of last year’s ‘Your Weight in Gold’ initiative with the same objective to create awareness on the necessity of adopting a healthy lifestyle with special focus on children and families. Called 'Your Weight In Gold', it promised to reward contestants with the precious metal if they shed weight, during a specified two-month period. According to the rules, adults would get 1 gram of gold for every kilogram lost (2.2 lbs), provided they shed at least 2 kilograms (kg). However, if a child under 13 from the family managed to lose 2 kg (4.4lbs), all members would receive double the gold (2 grams), for every additional kg they lost. The officials say that the numbers would have been even higher had the experts not turned away kids that were not overweight. What was even more encouraging was that at the final weigh-in on September 10th, 7,350 Dubai residents had met the requirements for the minimum weight loss and won themselves a total of 40 kg (88 lbs) or $1.5 million USD worth of shiny gold coins. As such, any person participating in the contest with one or more of his children will receive twice the reward for each kilogram of weight loss for each family member, he explained. The weight of each participating member will be measured at the beginning of the competition, and again 1.5 months later. Organisers of the Dubai Municipality initiative say they have been overwhelmed with the response from the public, who can this year enter with their families. “We expected more people to join this year but so far more than 25,000 people have signed up online, compared with last year’s 9,000,” said Walid Al Shaibani, head of the Municipality Club and coordinator of the Your Child in Gold campaign. “As of Wednesday about 15,000 of the 25,000 signed up had weighed in. More than 450 families had signed up to the competition by Wednesday, said Mr Al Shaibani. Mr Al Shaibani said the initiative was part of Dubai’s aim to be one of the healthiest cities in the world.
