Do antidepressants help with weight loss

How effective is Wellbutrin on

Can you rate your experience in the following areas and what dosage level you are on ? I started the generic form of welbutrin about 3 months ago and so far I have stayed stable at weight and the libido has elevated where it was nothing before :) so I can say that I am really happy with welbutrin the only thing that has been a pblm has been lack of sleep but thats still better then sleeping all the time as I had been on my other antidepressant. Initally, I was taking 100mg/day and I found that in the first 2 weeks, everything was worse. At about the 2 week point, things began to level out and I was feeling better. He increased to 200mg/day and I think that has been the perfect dose for me. My motivation has improved, not to where I want it to be, but enough to make me feel good about getting up and going. I desire it, but it's nothing too crazy, but it's definitely better and more satisfying than before starting the medication. Possibly because I don't feel the overwhelming feelings of grief and depression. So on those days where I make a plan about the things I want to do, I usually get up and do them. On days when I'm just lounging, I feel a bit anxious (maybe because the stimulant effect is not being effectively put into doing anything), which can feel overwhelming and make me not want to do much. Personally, I have been very satisfied with the effects and I think the higher the dosage, the more your natural ability to level out and work with the medication will be hindered or thrown off. My doctor said that being on the lowest dose that feels effective for you is the best option and, in my case, I greatly agree. My provider will be switching me to another med next month because he is very concerned with the weight loss and my BMI is way too low. more...

Whereas depression is usually constant, grief is more likely to ebb and flow in waves and it does not usually invoke the feelings of worthlessness and low self-esteem that are so characteristic of depression. "Once you develop the phenotype 'depression,' and have all the biological changes in your brain that go along with it, it's the illness," said Friedman. "And in a way," he said, "the conditions that led you to the infection are not relevant anymore - now you've got the infection and it's got to be treated." Where the mourning process does enter the clinical realm is with something known as "complicated grief," which occurs in about 10 to 20 percent of mourners and defines a grieving process that is not normal but is also not depression. Both it and depression warrant quick intervention - both conform to the illness narrative, and, with the risk of suicide, can even be life threatening. 1 bestseller by a respected physician argues that gluten and carbohydrates are at the root of Alzheimer's disease, anxiety, depression, and ADHD. If Antidepressants Don’t Cause Weight Gain, What Does

If Antidepressants Don't Cause Weight Gain, What Does? Most of the 11 antidepressants taken by the patients produced similar, small amounts of weight. Elavil and Wellbutrin were associated with the least weight gain and Celexa, the most. But even though Celexa caused significantly more weight to be gained, the actual amount was only a few pounds. Conclusion: The researchers said that patients should not be scared of taking antidepressants because they think they will gain weight. Your weight gain of 100 pounds on a combination of antidepressants is not related to your therapy? Weight was gained among those who had depression, but according to the author, only among those who had what she described as atypical depression, a depression characterized by increased appetite. However, they suggest that people who gain weight on antidepressants may be doing so not because of the medication, but because their depression has not gone away, and thus they continue to overeat. Most people are of normal weight before starting on their medication despite weeks of the mood disorder. If antidepressant drugs are not associated with weight gain, what is the explanation for the results of a year-long weight-loss trial with Prozac, many years ago, in which non-depressed, obese patients, gained weight? Alas, statistics are not going to help Sally and the many others who have indisputably gained weight on their antidepressant treatment, regardless of why they were being treated. One hopes that patients who are gaining weight are not ignored their weight gain because a study says that they should not be doing so. more...

Rob, who writes for  MSN Health and Fitness , verifies that Wellbutrin, which works with the brain chemical, dopamine, is not likely to cause weight gain and in some cases may help one to lose weight. Fernstrom also adds that Prozac, Celexa, and Lexapro do not cause weight gain. In an article entitled "Fat Pharms:  Antidepressants and Weight Gain"  the author here says that: ". Drugs like Prozac, Lexapro, Paxil, and Zoloft - can cause a weight gain of 10 pounds or more."  Sometimes it is difficult to know what to believe when the experts and users of these antidepressants frequently disagree on side effects. It just goes to show you that the individual experience in taking these antidepressants, and which side effects you might experience, is highly variable. Two other antidepressants which are cited frequently in the literature as not causing weight gain include Cymbalta and Serzone. Why weight gain can happen with antidepressants

Why weight gain can happen with antidepressants. Why do antidepressants cause weight gain? One thing is clear: Different antidepressants probably cause weight gain through different mechanisms. So it is likely that at least some of the weight gain that occurs on antidepressants is simply a reflection of the fact that people are feeling better and therefore eating more. Two of these receptors are especially associated with a proclivity toward weight gain when blocked. Antidepressants that block these receptors have more weight gain associated with them than do antidepressants that avoid them. Most of the older antidepressants such as the tricyclics (Elavil is probably the best known of these) blocked these receptors and reliably made people gain weight. Another relatively new antidepressant, mirtazapine (brand name Remeron), blocks the histamine receptor and is associated with significant weight gain. more...

Reversing Antidepressant Weight Gain - Psychology Today

When Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Blockers (SSRIs) were introduced as the new generation of antidepressants, it was hoped that weight gain would not be a problem. It was tested in a national study and although weight loss did occur early in the study, weight gain followed. The potential to cause weight gain is not limited to Prozac; at this point there is no effective antidepressant that does not have the potential to cause weight gain. They were also encouraged to resume the exercise some of them had abandoned after gaining weight. And they lost weight, despite continuing on the medications that had caused their weight gain. This approach to reversing antidepressant weight gain, now detailed in The Serotonin Power Diet, is simple and effective. For maximum efficacy, it should be put in place at the start of treatment so that weight gain can be prevented. The opposite was also reported by some of our clients who had been told to avoid eating carbohydrates by their physicians in order to lose weight. It is hoped that soon there will be a new class of drugs to regulate mood disorders without causing the distress of weight gain. more...

The problem with using these drugs for weight loss, beyond that the drugs haven’t been approved for that purpose, is that they often come with nasty side effects. The drugs seem to work by helping people control their cravings, and weight loss is often a side effect for people taking the drugs for the traditional reasons. more...
