For the third time in about two years, the Food and Drug Administration has approved a new weight-loss pill. All of the new drugs work by decreasing appetite and all have some side effects and drawbacks, though they differ. In Belviq's studies for the FDA, average losses were 3% to 3.7% over placebo; for Qsymia, average losses were 6.7% to 8.9% over placebo. "The ideal candidate for a drug to treat obesity is someone who uses the drug as a tool, along with diet and exercise," says Tsai, who has no ties with drug makers. Adults, 78.6 million, are obese, according the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Patients filled about 138,000 prescriptions for Qsymia in the second quarter of 2014, according to drug maker Vivus Inc. Prescription numbers for Belviq were about 110,000 in the same period, according to Arena Pharmaceuticals Inc., which makes the drug. That's a lot of room for growth, he says, and having a third drug approved just "gets more voices out there" talking about the pharmaceutical options. In the past, some obesity drugs have been linked to serious heart problems and pulled from the market. The makers of Contrave, Belviq and Qsymia have all agreed to conduct long-term heart safety studies and report the results to FDA. more...

Diet Pill for Diabetics Causes Healthy Weight Loss

Weight loss plays an important role in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. This week, researchers announce in a free online journal article published in the journal Obesity that the diet pill lorcaserin has demonstrated significant weight loss in patients with Type 2 diabetes. Lorcaserin is a serotonin receptor angonist that works specifically on appetite signals in the brain and has been shown in previous studies—with otherwise healthy obese individuals—to cause significant weight loss. Encouraged by the previous weight loss findings with lorcaserin, researchers from a variety of academic institutions and members of The Obesity Society (TOS), worked together to determine whether or not lorcaserin is safe and effective in the treatment of overweight patients with Type 2 diabetes. Metformin is an anti-diabetes drug that lowers blood sugar levels, and has been found to cause slight weight loss. All participants also engaged in a lifestyle modification weight loss program during the study. After one year, the researchers found that patients with Type 2 diabetes who took either the 10 milligrams of lorcasein twice a day or 10 milligrams of lorcasein just once a day, achieved a weight loss of 5.5% of their starting body weight in comparison to the placebo group that lost on average of only 1.5% of their starting body weight. The authors acknowledge that their study design has some limitations in that it only evaluated the effects of lorcasein on Type 2 diabetes patients whose diabetes is currently treated with oral agents that included metformin and/or SFU and that it remains to be tested whether the healthy weight loss results they observed with the diabetic diet pill lorcasein will also include a broader diabetic population. more...

Weight - Loss Drug Cuts Type 2 Diabetes - Medpage Today

The weight-loss drug Qsymia reduced the incidence of type 2 diabetes in overweight and obese patients at high risk for the disease, researchers reported. The weight-loss drug Qsymia - combination of phentermine and topiramate extended release - reduced the incidence of type 2 diabetes in overweight and obese patients at high risk for the disease, researchers reported. The reduction in risk varied depending on weight loss and was accompanied by improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors, Garvey and colleagues reported online in Diabetes Care. Nonetheless, Garvey and colleagues argued that - in combination with lifestyle modifications - the combination might constitute a "new and effective therapeutic approach" both to reduce weight and to cut the risk of diabetes. The original trial tested lifestyle modifications combined with placebo or one of two doses of the drug combination to test the weight-loss effect among overweight and obese volunteers, Garvey and colleagues noted. The remaining 475 participants included 316 with prediabetes, 451 with metabolic syndrome, and 292 with both. The average weight loss in the placebo arm was 2.5%, compared with 10.9% in the group taking the lower dose of the drug combination and 12.1% in the high-dose group (P. more...

Diabetes Drug May Spur Weight Loss in Obese Nondiabetics

Diabetes Drug May Spur Weight Loss in Obese People. THURSDAY, May 29, 2014 (Health Day News) - A higher dose of the diabetes drug liraglutide (Victoza) may help obese people without the disease lose weight, a new study suggests. "Liraglutide, an injection treatment already approved for diabetes treatment, can help reduce body weight in people with obesity when used at a higher dose than is usually used in diabetes ," said lead researcher Dr. "A number of drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes tend to produce weight loss as one of their effects," said Katz, who was not involved in the study. This is predictable because the insulin resistance that precedes and often accompanies type 2 diabetes results in frequent hunger and weight gain. Lowering blood sugar results in weight loss, he said. more...

Combined weight loss pill performs well - Health News

Compared with a placebo the new drug increased weight loss and also offered greater improvements in the other outcomes measured, including blood pressure. This study will form part of the manufacturer’s submission to have the drug approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, and the drug company may then submit a similar application for marketing authorisation of this treatment in Europe. The study compared this drug in two different doses to a placebo. The treatments (placebo and the study drug at different doses) were once-daily oral medications that were intended to be taken for 56 weeks alongside standardised counselling for diet and lifestyle modification. Participants were also asked about the use of any other drugs, adverse events and how compliant they had been with their treatments. Both doses of the study drug were more effective than the placebo, resulting in greater weight loss: 6.5kg and 8.8kg more than placebo for the low and high dose treatments, respectively. The drug also improved other outcomes measured, including blood pressure, waist circumference, blood fats and inflammatory markers. The researchers note that the psychiatric adverse events were mainly during the early phase of treatment and they disappeared when the drug was discontinued. The researchers conclude that their drug combining topiramate and phentermine, when given along with lifestyle interventions, could be “added to the limited number of available treatments for obesity”. This large randomised controlled trial describes a study assessing the effects of a new treatment for weight loss in overweight and obese individuals. The manufacturer’s website for this new drug, Qnexa, says that there are three large studies investigating its effects and that together they demonstrate that the drug is effective. If the drug is approved for use in the US, an application to the EU may then follow for consideration of the treatment under European regulations and systems. more...

The Weight Loss Pill Of The Future Helps

The Weight Loss Pill Of The Future (No, We Swear) Helps Diabetics And Obese. Weight loss pills are successful when they work with the body's normal processes. Researchers are calling it the “Invisible Meal” because of how it interacts with the body’s digestive system, and if it works as well in humans as it already has in mice, the future of weight loss could see serious turnarounds. "This pill is like an imaginary meal," said Ronald Evans, director of Salk's Gene Expression Laboratory and senior author of the new paper, in a statement . If mouse models are anything to go by, the future is promising. Over a five-week period, lab mice who took a daily pill of fexaramine, a compound the team developed from the normal drug combination, showed significant weight loss; drops in blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar; and rises in body temperature, which signaled accelerated metabolisms. They also lost significantly more body fat compared to the mice that weren’t on the regimen, and some of the white fat turned to the healthier brown fat that helps burn energy. "The body's response to a meal is like a relay race, and if you tell all the runners to go at the same time, you'll never pass the baton," Evans said. In future trials, Evans and the team hope to transition the findings from mouse to human models. more...

Patients in clinical trials went from an average 227 pounds to 204 pounds on Qsymia; on Belviq, the average weight dropped from 220 to 207. In trials, 47% of patients without Type 2 diabetes lost at least 5% of their body weight on Belviq, according to the FDA. In people with Type 2 diabetes, 38% of patients on Belviq lost at least 5% of their body weight, compared with 16% on a placebo. The most common side effects of Belviq in nondiabetic patients included headache, dizziness and fatigue, according to the FDA. more...

Diabetes and Weight Management

We often assume weight loss is good and healthy. A slow steady intentional weight loss using nutritional change and exercise is associated with beneficial effects on the heart, blood pressure , and cholesterol levels . In addition, weight loss can reduce "i nsulin resistance" and make muscles and fat tissues more sensitive to circulating insulin levels in the blood. As a result, a vicious cycle occurs, the higher the insulin levels are, the harder it is to lose weight (insulin is anabolic, and is a hormone that likes to store fat). While intentional weight loss in people with diabetes is usually a good thing, unintentional weight loss is not. If blood sugars are very high, patients with diabetes tend to urinate a lot, and this results in dehydration as a possible cause of weight loss. Actually, many patients with diabetes present for the first time to their doctor's office because of unexplained loss of weight. In addition to diabetes, there are other concerning causes of unexpected weight loss which should be explored such as thyroid disease and cancers. This is why all exercise and weight loss programs should be started only after discussion with a physician. Any unexplained weight loss, in patients with or without known diabetes may be a sign of high blood sugars or another serious illness. more...

FDA approves Belviq to treat some overweight or obese adults

The drug is approved for use in adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater (obese), or adults with a BMI of 27 or greater (overweight) and who have at least one weight-related condition such as high blood pressure (hypertension), type 2 diabetes, or high cholesterol (dyslipidemia). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one-third of adults in the United States are obese. D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “The approval of this drug, used responsibly in combination with a healthy diet and lifestyle, provides a treatment option for Americans who are obese or are overweight and have at least one weight-related comorbid condition.” Belviq works by activating the serotonin 2 C receptor in the brain. The safety and efficacy of Belviq were evaluated in three randomized, placebo-controlled trials that included nearly 8,000 obese and overweight patients, with and without type 2 diabetes, treated for 52 to 104 weeks. In people with type 2 diabetes, about 38 percent of patients treated with Belviq and 16 percent treated with placebo lost at least 5 percent of their body weight. The approved labeling for Belviq recommends that the drug be discontinued in patients who fail to lose 5 percent of their body weight after 12 weeks of treatment, as these patients are unlikely to achieve clinically meaningful weight loss with continued treatment. Heart valve function was assessed by echocardiography in nearly 8,000 patients in the Belviq development program. There was no statistically significant difference in the development of FDA-defined valve abnormalities between Belviq and placebo-treated patients. Because preliminary data suggest that the number of serotonin 2 B receptors may be increased in patients with congestive heart failure, Belviq should be used with caution in patients with this condition. more...

New Type of Diabetes Drug Drops Weight With Blood Sugar

New Type of Diabetes Drug Drops Weight With Blood Sugar. June 25, 2010 – A new class of diabetes drug lowers blood sugar - and weight - by increasing the amount of sugar released in the urine. Because dapagliflozin makes the body excrete excess sugar, it makes diabetes patients lose weight. Metformin helps patients lose weight, too, but those adding dapagliflozin to metformin lost about 4 and 1/2 more pounds than those taking metformin alone in the 24-week study. The lost weight was not just water. Might this new diabetes drug work as a weight loss pill ? "The weight loss effect of the drug becomes less and less as the blood -sugar level comes to near normal," he notes. "Therefore the weight loss potential of this drug is very small at normal blood - sugar levels ." And the drug does not lower blood sugar to dangerously low levels - yet another plus. more...

Belviq : 5 Things You Need to Know About the New Weight

The first new prescription diet drug in 13 years won Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval on Wednesday, offering a new alternative to aid weight loss for the nearly one in three Americans who are considered obese. The new drug, called Belviq (lorcaserin), is made by Arena Pharmaceuticals. The drug works by controlling appetite — specifically by activating brain receptors for serotonin , a neurotransmitter that triggers feelings of satiety and satisfaction. For best results, dieters are advised to use the medication together with a healthy diet and exercise program. The approved labeling for Belviq also recommends that people discontinue the drug if they fail to lose 5% of their body weight after 12 weeks; longer treatment is unlikely to lead to meaningful weight loss. The FDA approved the medication for people who are obese (with a body mass index, or BMI, of 30 or higher) or who are overweight (with a BMI of 27 or above) and also have at least one weight-related health condition such as Type 2 diabetes , high blood pressure or high cholesterol. A similar serotonin-based drug that had been approved for weight loss — fenfluramine — was removed from the market in 1997 because of the same heart concerns. The FDA won’t require patients taking Belviq to be monitored for heart-valve damage, but the company is required to conduct six studies once the drug reaches the market to determine whether it causes heart attacks or stroke in people  who take it. Weight loss drug Saxenda wins FDA approval - CBS News

A new, injectable weight-loss drug has been approved by the U. The agency on Tuesday approved Saxenda (liraglutide) for adults who are obese or for those who are overweight and have at least one weight-related health condition , such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. Patients taking the drug, made by Novo Nordisk, should still follow a low-calorie diet and exercise regularly, the FDA noted. Three clinical trials assessed the safety and effectiveness of the drug for weight loss. The trials involved roughly 4,800 obese and overweight people with and without other weight-related conditions. One clinical trial that involved patients without diabetes found that patients taking Saxenda had an average weight loss of 4.5 percent after one year. Of the people treated with the drug, 62 percent lost at least 5 percent of their body weight. The FDA added that patients should be examined to determine if Saxenda is working after 16 weeks of treatment. Those who do not lose at least 4 percent of their body weight by that time should stop taking the medication, the FDA said. more...

Newly Approved Weight Loss Drugs - Can They Help You

However, when weight loss medications are combined with diet and exercise, as they should be, an added benefit may be seen. A low-fat diet and regular exercise are part of the weight-loss regimen that should be continued even if weight loss medicines are stopped. Update: The New Weight Loss Drugs Qsymia, Belviq and Contrave. In 2012, the FDA approved the first two new weight loss drugs in 13 years - Qsymia by Vivus Pharmaceuticals and Belviq by Arena Pharmaceuticals. Like Qsymia, the safety of taking Belviq with other weight loss drugs is not known. Alli should be used in conjunction with diet and regular exercise to promote weight loss. Drugs that are considered stimulant weight loss drugs include phentermine ( Adipex-P ), phendimetrazine ( Bontril SR ) and diethylpropion . These are controlled substances approved for short-term use in weight loss - usually only up to 12 weeks - because these drugs can lead to abuse and dependence with long-term use. As with other weight loss treatments, these drugs should be used in conjunction with diet and exercise to maintain weight loss. In contrast, Alli, Contrave, Belviq, and Qsymia are all approved for long-term use in weight loss. Are OTC Herbal Weight Loss Pills Safe and Effective? more...

Weight Loss Pills Quick Fix or Danger - Diabetic Connect

Then along came the popular “Fen-Phen” This combination produced some significant weight loss, but so do amphetamines, and not without some serious side effects such as high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and pulmonary hypertension. The drug was marketed as Redux®, a combination of phentermine and fenfluamine. The phentermine component increased metabolism and energy levels as well. After this debacle another drug that stimulated serotonin, sibutramine or Meridia® was brought to the US market. Eventually, this drug was found to have cardiac risk factors in some patients that the FDA could not ignore. As patients and health practitioners came to realize, weight loss with this drug came with a heavy price tag. Xanical® can produce weight loss in the right patient, however, without the side effects such as increased heart rate and blood pressure, etc. Next on the horizon is a drug that many people are anxiously awaiting called Qnexa®. Some studies have shown that this drug helps significantly with weight loss (up to 10 percent of body weight), but is not without side effects and warnings. This drug will also have guidelines as with all medications in this class as to how it is used and which patient it may be good for. It is true that we all may need help of some sort, and with proper physician monitoring the right patient can do well on many of these medications. more...

The Dilemma of Weight Loss in Diabetes - Diabetes Spectrum

The Dilemma of Weight Loss in Diabetes. Furthermore, for people with type 2 diabetes, the message often is that weight loss is the answer to improving glucose control: “If you just lose 20 lb, you won't need insulin.” What does research tell us about these issues, and what should our messages as health professionals be to people with diabetes? Is weight loss the complete answer for improving blood glucose control? The remainder of this editorial addresses what is known today about weight loss in general and how this information applies to people with diabetes. And, for people with diabetes, is weight loss the cure? Weight Loss in People With Diabetes. And, yes, it does appear that in people with diabetes, weight loss may be more difficult than in people without diabetes, as was first suggested by Wing et al. Should the focus of nutrition therapy for type 2 diabetes be on weight loss or improved blood glucose control? Another issue that makes weight loss even more of a dilemma is the effect of intentional weight loss on mortality in type 2 diabetes. 25 reported that people with diabetes who had an intentional weight loss in the Cancer Prevention Study I experienced a 25% reduction in total mortality and a 28% reduction in cardiovascular disease-plus-diabetes mortality. Until all the dilemmas are solved, what are appropriate messages concerning weight loss for people with diabetes? These results highlight the importance of counseling people with diabetes to increase physical activity and improve fitness, not only as a means of controlling weight, but also for the benefits of fitness that are independent of weight loss. more...

Anti - obesity medication - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Orlistat (Xenical) the most commonly used medication to treat obesity and sibutramine (Meridia) a medication that was recently withdrawn due to cardiovascular side effects. [1] The main treatment modalities for overweight and obese individuals remain dieting and physical exercise . Because of potential side effects , it is recommended that anti-obesity drugs only be prescribed for obesity where it is hoped that the benefits of the treatment outweigh its risks. Current and potential anti-obesity drugs may operate through one or more of the following mechanisms: It was not until the 1920s and 1930s that new treatments began to appear. [13] Fen-phen was born and rapidly became the most commonly prescribed diet medication. Dexfenfluramine (Redux) was developed in the mid-1990s as an alternative to fenfluramine with less side-effects, and received regulatory approval in 1996. Ephedra was removed from the US market in 2004 over concerns that it raises blood pressure and could lead to strokes and death. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a revised label for Xenical to include new safety information about cases of severe liver injury that have been reported rarely with the use of this medication. In the past, it was noted by the US that Meridia was a harmless drug for fighting obesity. The combination of phentermine and topiramate , brand name Qsymia (formerly Qnexa) was approved by the U. Unresearched nonprescription products or programs for weight loss are heavily promoted by mail and print advertising and on the internet.
