Does Celexa make you gain weight? I have been reading a lot that Celexa makes you gain a lot of weight. Many people are not even aware that weight gain is one of the most common side effects associated with Celexa until it is too late. Weight gain caused by Celexa and other antidepressants is a major reason for people stopping drug treatment. Deprex raises circulating serotonin levels, restores the appropriate production of serotonin and norepinephrine and regulates cortisol release – without weight gain side effects or other side effects commonly associated with Celexa and other antidepressants. Effexor weight gain is not as severe as the weight gain reported with Paxil, Prozac, Celexa and Zoloft. With Celexa weight gain, it is not the amount of food eaten, but the body’s crippled metabolism. If you are taking Celexa, chances are Celexa is contributing to the sluggish metabolism. The only true solution to Celexa weight gain is not to take Celexa. It is now known that long-term use of SSRIs like Celexa are associated with weight gain. Only your doctor or other healthcare professional can tell you when to stop taking Celexa. Celexa didn t increase my appetite or make me gain weight just because of the drug.

Not scared I will fail but scared of the side affects and if I put on weight. To ease off, you can follow the same pattern, taking off 5 or 10 mg at a time for two weeks or even slower if you wish. The smoother you ease off, the less side effects you likely will experience. You just have to hang in there, just like when you started on the medication. I lost 5 lbs in the first month on Citalopram because of nausea and reduced emotional eating, then gained 15 in the next 9 months, for a net gain of 10 lbs. That is pretty much all I have for you, hope it helps, and good luck with the tapering off! But if you don't forsee that as a problem, then it would certainly help your wallet to come off the meds! I have recently stopped taking lexapro (which is very closely related to celexa) and it took me a long time to get off it, even with the supervision of a psychiatrist. That solved the problem right away, and I've now been off lexapro for 2 months without any sickness. I'm on the maximum dose of citalopram and have been worried about how or if I could ever get off it someday. I have hope now that as I start feeling better and work through the emotional damage I will be off it someday.
Citalopram ( /saɪˈtæləˌpræm, sɪ-/ ; brand names: Celexa, Cipramil and others) is an antidepressant drug of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. In Australia, the UK, Germany, Portugal, Poland, and most European countries, it is licensed for depressive episodes and panic disorder with or without agoraphobia . In the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence ranking of 10 antidepressants for efficacy and cost-effectiveness citalopram is fifth in effectiveness (after mirtazapine , escitalopram , venlafaxine , and sertraline ) and fourth in cost-effectiveness. Citalopram is licensed in the UK and other European countries for panic disorder, with or without agoraphobia. The dose is 10 mg/d for a week, increasing to 20–30 mg/d, with a maximum of 40 mg/d. Citalopram 40 mg/d is well tolerated and as effective as moclobemide in social anxiety disorder. A meta-analysis, including studies with fluoxetine, paroxetine, sertraline, escitalopram, and citalopram versus placebo, showed SSRIs to be effective in reducing symptoms of premenstrual syndrome, whether taken continuously or just in the luteal phase. Citalopram and other SSRIs can be used to treat hot flashes . Some research suggests citalopram interacts with cannabinoid protein-couplings in the rat brain, and this is put forward as a potential cause of some of the drug's antidepressant effect. Citalopram is typically taken in one dose, either in the morning or evening. Citalopram is considered safe and well tolerated in the therapeutic dose range. Citalopram theoretically causes side effects by increasing the concentration of serotonin in other parts of the body (e.g., the intestines). Other side effects, such as increased apathy and emotional flattening, may be caused by the decrease in dopamine release associated with increased serotonin. Prior to these changes, the FDA recommended target dose of citalopram was 40 mg/day, and the FDA recommended maximum dose was 60 mg/day.
Hate the weight gain and breast enlargement. Taking Gravol together with the Citalopram shouldn't be a problem - although do you mind me asking why you are taking it? What time of the day do you take the Citalopram? If it causes insomnia for you you should take it in the morning. I think that considering your mood is stable and improved it would be a shame to stop the Citalopram. Regarding the weight gain, there isn't an easy answer i'm afraid. When i 1st got put on citalopram i got told to take it at night time, and had the same problems. I went to the docs and she said to take them on a morning instead. If you are taking the Gravol for sleep, I would recommend a change to something like diphenhydramine. Different people repsond differently to antidepressants, what causes weight gain for one, may not the other. Take the citalopram in the morning and if the diphenhydramine doesn't work, I would discuss a sleep aid with the doctor.

However, some side effects associated with this medication could be connected with weight loss. In clinical trials, of 1,063 patients taking citalopram at doses ranging from 10 to 80 mg per day, up to 21 percent in some studies experienced nausea, and up to 4 percent experienced vomiting.
I've never had trouble keeping my weight to it's ideal before and I know how to lose weight when i've needed to in the past so this is really puzzling. I actually requested Celexa because I had been on it years back and knew it was a fast-acting drug with few adverse side effects, but I never equated it with my weight gain back then. And I was told that most SSRI antidepressants DO cause weight gain. Before my dignoses and during my pregancy I put on 50lbs and havent lost any since then and now with the meds I can see myself getting bigger all the time! This extra weight on me makes me hate myself even more and now I'm wondering if being on the meds is really worth it when I am disgsted with myself every day and the thought of running into someone looking like this makes my anxiety ten times worse, some days I don't want to leave the house because of it! I dont want to hijack your thread but I'd love to know if anyone who experienced weight gain on citalopram has had success with losing weight through diet and excersise, I desperately need a glimmer of hope here! If you typically lose weight or are thin during depressive periods, and eat normally or eat excessively during happy or periods of contentment, you may gain weight while on celexa, because when it works, it generally works well. I loved the effects on my mood and lifting my depression. I just hated the effects on my butt and my thighs and my belly! My doctor told me that Citalopram will not cause weight gain, as one of the reasons for my depression was eating disorders/self image issues. However, within that past couple of months, I have noticed an EXTREME weight gain in myself (I was always the skinniest one in the house, now I'm not). I have put on 14 pounds in the past few months and am absolutely horrified! I eat a lot, but the only thing I have done is stop drinking soda and drinking at least 6 glasses of water a day. I knew all about anti-depressants because I was others for years and made me gain weight.
I am now on Celexa and have noticed weight gain. In reality I am now over weight and the scale keeps going up. I have been on Celexa about 10 months and have gained ~8 pounds. Have been on Celexa for 9 days now, and I am hungry ALL the time, even after I eat a full meal, I feel like I'm starving! I was totally unaware of the side effect of weight gain and wish I would have known. I'm also on Celexa and have been for over a year now. I too, have also experienced the weight gain and puffy eyes. I was disappointed at the weight gain, but have come to find that walking, along with a good diet seems to help. And because of the hold that pharmaceuticals have on the medical community the doctors just say . Hi I have been on the wellbutrin for 14 days now while I was weaning off the celexa and after I was done taking that and using Wellbutrin alone, I started to have panic attacks, nervousness, insonmia, and fast to anger for no reason. I wanted off the celexa because of weight gain.

Antidepressants cause minimal weight gain. A study from a Harvard-based team shows that the amount gained is usually small, and that it differs little from one antidepressant to another. Earlier studies linking antidepressant use to weight gain were usually small and short. The researchers chose citalopram as a reference, because earlier studies suggested that it is “average” when it comes to weight gain. In this study, the weight gain experienced by people taking citalopram averaged one to two pounds. Compared to citalopram, the weight gain linked to other antidepressants was small. Bupropion was associated with the least amount of weight gain, close to none. Two others that also appeared to have less weight gain were amitriptyline and nortriptyline. At the other end of the spectrum, citalopram caused the most weight gain. The results of this study indicate that worries about weight gain shouldn’t influence the choice of antidepressant for most people. It’s also the one associated with the least amount of weight gain. And don’t give up if the first one doesn’t work. For them, it’s probably best to stay away from an antidepressant that causes even more weight gain.
Celexa in Detail with Side Effects. The adverse events associated with discontinuation and considered drug-related (i.e., associated with discontinuation in at least 1% of Celexa-treated patients at a rate at least twice that of placebo) are shown in TABLE 2. Events included are those occurring in 2% or more of patients treated with Celexa and for which the incidence in patients treated with Celexa was greater than the incidence in placebo-treated patients. The only commonly observed adverse event that occurred in Celexa patients with an incidence of 5% or greater and at least twice the incidence in placebo patients was ejaculation disorder (primarily ejaculatory delay) in male patients (see TABLE 3). The potential relationship between the dose of Celexa administered and the incidence of adverse events was examined in a fixed-dose study in depressed patients receiving placebo or Celexa 10, 20, 40, and 60 mg. The table below displays the incidence of sexual side effects reported by at least 2% of patients taking Celexa in a pool of placebo-controlled clinical trials in patients with depression. In female depressed patients receiving Celexa, the reported incidence of decreased libido and anorgasmia was 1.3% (n=638 females) and 1.1% (n=252 females), respectively. Celexa and placebo groups were compared with respect to (1) mean change from baseline in vital signs (pulse, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure) and (2) the incidence of patients meeting criteria for potentially clinically significant changes from baseline in these variables. In addition, a comparison of supine and standing vital sign measures for Celexa and placebo treatments indicated that Celexa treatment is not associated with orthostatic changes. Celexa and placebo groups were compared with respect to (1) mean change from baseline in various serum chemistry, hematology , and urinalysis variables, and (2) the incidence of patients meeting criteria for potentially clinically significant changes from baseline in these variables. The incidence of tachycardic outliers was 0.5% in the Celexa group and 0.4% in the placebo group. The incidence of bradycardic outliers was 0.9% in the Celexa group and 0.4% in the placebo group. It is important to emphasize that, although the events reported occurred during treatment with Celexa, they were not necessarily caused by it.
Cipralex and Weight Gain. Cipralex Weight Gain issues are part of one of the common topics I find in my inbox: the whole issue of whether SSRI’s make you put on weight and if so how can this be avoided. Many people have had issues with Celexa (citalopram) and weight gain , but as this personal experience shows, other SSRI’s such as Cipralex (escitalopram) can have weight gain issues. Have been really watching what I eat, but the weight has not come off. I am hepatitis c positive and am scared to try duloxetine although that is the only SSRI that is good for severe anxiety/depression and has no weight gain associated with it. I have been on Cipralex for 10 weeks now, and the weight gain is not such a major issue anymore, just have to watch what I eat. It’s great that taking Cipralex has been positive and beneficial here, and I wish them all the best as they continue to recover! It has long been known the SSRI’s have a tendency to cause weight gain, but not everyone suffers (indeed many SSRI’s list both weight gain and weight loss as possible side effects!). No has a definitive answer to the question “why do SSRI’s cause weight gain?” but I have heard a theory which may have some credence. Tryptophan has a better chance of crossing the blood brain barrier and turning into Serotonin when it doesn’t have to vie for space with other amino acids.

Celexa and Weight Gain. I have been taking celexa for about 9 months and in the past couple of months I noticed my clothes not fitting and feeling the weight gain. The weight I gained was pure fat and now I have cellulite on my legs which I did not have before. I did find that the drug helped with my symptoms but the weight gain was immediate and intense. I was prescribed the Celexa for adjustment disorder and anxiety, but with the weight gain I’m actually feeling depressed. I have been taking 40 mg for over a year and my weight gain has been from 210 to 250… I have been on this drug for about 8 months now and I have gained a whopping 35 pounds! It's strange about the weight gain isn't it, how some people do gain weight and others don't. I've piled on weight since being on Citalopram (for 2 and a bit years) and am now coming off it (one more tablet to go!) because the weight gain is making my anxiety and depression far worse instead of better. I am desperately hoping that the weight will start to come off now. I've been on Citalopram for about 10 months now and have probably gained in the region of 2 stone since i've been on it. I was on 40mg and i've cut down to 10mg now but my weight has just stuck. I'm aiming to be off it completely come Autumn and i'm hoping that I can start to shift the weight. I am hoping to ween myself off asap and maybe then I can lose the weight. Good to get your feedback gym bunny and to learn that you managed to lose the excess weight. My life has improved for the better and I wanted to come off them.
