Paying to lose : cost effectiveness of weight

In a new analysis, the popular Weight Watchers program and the drug Qsymia were the most cost-effective strategies to lose weight. “To me the main message is that there are only a few viable options for weight loss,” Eric Finkelstein told Reuters Health in an email. “(Weight Watchers) and Qsymia currently provide the best bang for the buck but Jenny Craig is most effective.” For the new analysis, Finkelstein and his co-author reviewed randomized controlled trials – the “gold standard” of medical research – that evaluated non-surgical weight loss strategies over at least one year. They then paired those results with data on prices to estimate the cost per kilogram of weight loss and cost per "quality adjusted life year," which is the cost for each year of life gained by using the program or drug. After excluding studies that lasted less than a year or had other problems, their analysis included Weight Watchers and Vtrim, both diet and lifestyle programs, the Jenny Craig meal-replacement program and the drugs Qsymia, Lorcaserin and Orlistat. The researchers found that the average cost per kilogram (2.2 pounds) lost ranged from about $155 for Weight Watchers to about $546 with the Roche drug Orlistat, which is available by prescription as Xenical or over-the-counter as Alli. The researchers found that Weight Watchers, at $34,630, was the cheapest program per quality adjusted life year gained. As someone paying for the program, however, he said he would limit his investment to programs proven to work and those that have the participant take on some cost responsibility, such as weight loss success. more...

Many of these products advance the seller's own resolution to help you lose weight in one area only: your wallet. The truth: "People think products in TV ads are safe and ads are 'approved' by the U. "They are not, and people need to remember advertising for what it is: to get you to buy the product. It's up to you to evaluate the claims." Dieters in Weight Watchers study drop up to

People lost more on Weight Watchers than with docs' advice, WW study says. Weight Watchers funded the study but had no control over design or results. Overweight and obese adults who followed the Weight Watchers program lost more than twice as much weight as those who received weight-loss advice from a doctor or nurse, according to a new yearlong study funded by the company. The 61% of Weight Watchers users who stuck with the program for a full year lost 15 pounds, on average, compared with 7 pounds among the 54% of people in the other group who continued to visit their doctors each month. When the researchers included the people who dropped out of either program before the year was up, the average weight loss was lower but followed the same pattern: 11 pounds in the Weight Watchers group and 5 pounds in the other group. D., an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, Minnesota, says it's only natural that the weekly weigh-ins and "group spirit" of programs such as Weight Watchers would prove more effective than occasional guidance from a doctor or nurse, since research has shown that dieters are more likely to stick with weight-loss programs that stress accountability. "It's not terribly surprising that a group whose whole career is basically helping people with weight management would do a better job than a primary-care group that has a lot more responsibilities on top of that," says Jensen, who was not involved in the study. People may be more likely to stick with a program like Weight Watchers when they're participating free of charge, however. People in the Weight Watchers group were three times more likely than the other participants to lose 10% or more of their initial body weight. And nearly two-thirds of the Weight Watchers users lost 5% or more of their body weight, versus one-third in the other group. Although Weight Watchers sponsored the study, Jebb stresses that the company had no control over the design or results. more...

Here are the 5 most common plastic surgery procedures that follow weight loss surgery. Cost of Weight Loss (Bariatric) Surgery. Weight loss surgery is both complex and costly. The cost of gastric bypass surgery generally comprises the pre-op lab and X-ray fees, anesthesia, hospital facility and surgeon's fee. Since gastric bypass is a complex surgery, with more than one method, many variables and recovery issues, costs can escalate quickly. The cost of adjustable gastric banding generally comprises the hospital facility fee, the surgeon's fee, pre-op lab and X-ray fees and follow-up appointments for adjustments or fills during the first year after gastric banding surgery. Other types of weight loss surgery including the gastric sleeve surgery and duodenal switch surgery involve some of the same primary costs as gastric bypass and gastric banding , but they also have some additional variables that may affect the price. When evaluating weight loss surgery cost, remember that after your procedure, additional plastic surgery may be necessary. With regard to follow-up plastic surgery procedures, the more skin and fat to be removed, the longer the surgical time requirement and the higher the cost. You should discuss these procedures and the additional costs with your doctor. Health insurance providers including Medicare and, in some states, Medicaid, are beginning to cover some or all of the costs of surgery for obesity if medical necessity is established by your doctor and if you meet the National Institutes of Health requirements. Many bariatric physicians and plastic surgeons offer payment plans to help you manage the cost of your weight loss surgery. more...

Study compares cost - effectiveness of weight - loss programs

In a cost-effectiveness analysis of commercial diet programs and pills, the Weight Watchers program and the drug Qsymia showed the best value for the money. The findings, published in the June issue of the journal Obesity, provide important information on the health and weight-loss benefits per dollar spent as insurance carriers consider coverage for weight loss programs and drugs. "The obesity epidemic is raising serious health and cost consequences, so employers and third-party payers are beginning to consider how to provide some coverage for commercial weight loss programs," said senior author Eric Finkelstein, Ph. Three diet/lifestyle programs and three medications met the inclusion criteria for the cost-effectiveness analysis: Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig and VTrim, along with the diet pills Qsymia, Lorcaserin and Orlistat. In terms of cost, Weight Watchers was shown to be the least expensive intervention, consisting of an average annual cost of $377. Expected annual costs for the diet pills was $1,743 for Lorcaserin; $1,518 for Orlistat; and $1,336 for Qsymia. Based on the cost and weight-loss data, the average cost per kilogram lost ranged from $155 per kg for Weight Watchers to $338 or more for Jenny Craig. When the analysis was extended from cost per kilogram lost to cost per quality adjusted life year saved (QALY), the researchers found that Weight Watchers and Qsymia showed the best value for money. Qsymia also showed good value for money because the additional weight loss came at a fairly low cost. more...

How much does it cost to lose 30 pounds

Ask yourself if you can afford the program and if it fits your lifestyle. Despite studies saying Americans are getting fatter every year, people are obsessed with weight loss, and the business of losing weight has ballooned into a $30-billion-a-year industry. The key is finding a program that fits your lifestyle and budget. Of course, you could always go the old-fashioned route, reducing calories and increasing exercise, but many dieters benefit from added structure and support, not to mention the accountability (there's nothing like a little public humiliation to keep you motivated) that accompanies an organized program. But paying someone to keep you on the straight and narrow isn't cheap. Jenny Rewards, priced at $399 or $359, is a 12-month program that rewards dieters' efforts and weight loss with discounts on food. There's also an at-home option which is similar to the in-store choices except you also pay for shipping and have consultations over the phone. Then, there's the cost of food. The 28-day program includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks (you can add fresh vegetables, fruit and dairy). If, on average, you lose two pounds a week, the diet will take about four months. It's cheaper to sign up for the Auto-Delivery Savings program (the food keeps coming until you cancel it), which costs $293.72, including shipping, per month. We ask that you stay focused on the story topic, respect other people's opinions, and avoid profanity, offensive statements, illegal contents and advertisement posts.
