Acupuncture for the treatment of obesity: a review of the evidence. The aim of this review paper was to survey and critically evaluate the descriptive and controlled trials of acupuncture for enhancing weight loss. The underlying principles of acupoint stimulation are described, with an emphasis on auricular (ear) acupuncture, the method most often chosen for obesity studies. The serious, widespread and refractory nature of obesity makes it ripe for investigations of complementary and alternative approaches. The focus of this review will be on acupuncture as a treatment for obesity. This paper will provide: (1) a brief overview of the methods and mechanisms of acupuncture; (2) a summary of descriptive and controlled studies of acupuncture in the treatment of obesity; and (3) an agenda for future research. Auricular (ear) acupuncture is the method most often used for the treatment of obesity. 29 Common auricular points used in the treatment of obesity include 'Hunger' and 'Stomach' points (for satiety and fullness) and 'Shenmen' (for sedation and analgesia) 34 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ( Figure 2 ). 47 , 48 The positive effects of standard acupuncture 49 and electroacupuncture 50 on mood have been observed in treating clinical depression. Acupuncture For Weight Loss - Acupuncture and Massage

Acupuncture For Weight Loss. As an alternative therapy, using acupuncture for weight loss, when combined in a comprehensive weight loss program involving diet modification and exercise, has been shown to have positive effects. “Experts recommend that primary care clinicians offer overweight adults interventions that promote weight loss,” says Erin Le Blanc and colleagues from the Center for Health Research in Portland, Oregon. However, evidence on the effectiveness of primary care-relevant weight loss interventions for overweight adults is insufficient, they add. Unlike over-the-counter weight loss products and fad diets which cause weight to cycle, acupuncture is a natural means to achieve weight loss. Acupuncture for Weight Control - Why Crash Diets Crash

Cycle and metabolic slow down, it is important to focus on the amount of fat you lose rather than the amount of weight you lose. Our Weight Control Program from the Pacific Wellness Institute is designed to help you: When you eventually gain back the weight, it is all fat and not muscle, causing your metabolism to slow down even more. Now you have extra weight, a less healthy body composition, and a less attractive physique. The Pacific Wellness Institute dispels some common myths about body fat to help set you on a course of greater fitness and health: Myth #2: Scales are the best way to determine if you are overweight and have too much body fat. A better way to measure body fat loss is to feel the difference in how your clothes fit. BIA estimates the percentage of lean muscle tissue in your body and other essential biological markers of health. But unlike scale weight, BIA reveals the overall health of a person, as well as the proportion and amount of fat and lean tissue. more...

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Weight Loss

Traditional Chinese Medicine and Weight Loss. Over the past few decades, Western medicine has been faced with finding effective means to combat the growing rate of overweight and obesity. The Western approach has been focused on making lifestyle changes like eating fewer calories and increasing levels of exercise. Traditional Chinese medicine works off the concept that living an unhealthy lifestyle leads to spleen damage. Herbs are another popular treatment for excess weight in traditional Chinese medicine. Chinese approaches have not been studied as extensively and more research is needed. Looking ahead, it is likely that a combination of both approaches, often called Integrative Chinese Western Medicine, may be helpful in the treatment of excess weight. This approach has been shown to be effective for conditions such as male fertility7 and stroke.8. more...

Can acupuncture in your ear help you lose weight

Researchers have found acupuncture on the ear helped overweight people slim down within eight weeks (file picture) There's hope if Christmas over-indulgence leaves you with an unsightly spare tyre – because acupuncture on the ear will banish it,  say researchers. They found it helped overweight people slim down within eight weeks, especially around the midriff. Participants in a two-month study saw their body mass index (BMI) drop by up to 6 per cent and also had less body fat and a smaller waist, says a report published online in the journal Acupuncture in Medicine. So-called auricular acupuncture therapy is based on the understanding that the outer ear represents all parts of the body. Researchers at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, South Korea tested the traditional method on 91 overweight adults, who were all put on the same diet. Almost a third dropped out before the eight weeks were up, 15 of whom were in the sham treatment group, suggesting they found it harder to regulate their hunger and cope with the restrictive diet, say the authors. Among those who kept going there was a 6 per cent drop in BMI in the five-point group and 5.7 per cent in the one-point group. Waist circumference fell, with the largest drop seen in the group on the five-point treatment. more...

Can Acupuncture Help You Lose Weight? - Women's Health

For this study, researchers wanted to not only test out the effectiveness of ear acupuncture in general in boosting weight loss, but also see which kind works best. They looked at two types of ear acupuncture: The first uses just one needle, which is placed in your ear's "hunger point"—the point linked to appetite. The other kind uses five needles, which are placed in five different key points of your ear: one called the Shen Men, as well as those that are thought to be linked to the stomach, spleen, endocrine, and hunger. Researchers looked at 91 overweight Koreans, giving some the “five point” treatment and others the “single point” treatment. more...

Acupuncture for Weight Loss

There are so many diets out there and it seems like every doctor, nutritionist and medical professional has a different approach on how to help you lose weight. I am here to tell you about the Chinese medicine approach. The difference with Traditional Chinese Medicine is that it has 4000 years of history to back it up and it belongs to a culture that generally, do not have problems with their weight. The key is that, as a culture, they have a different approach to food and nutrition. One of the most important things we can do, and a concept that is integral to Chinese medicine, is to eat REAL FOOD. It is becoming increasingly confusing for the consumer to know exactly what is in the food we buy and how much it has been modified. The Chinese have a holistic view of the body, and a very different approach to diet and nutrition than we do in the West. The Chinese believe that one should eat foods that are locally grown, that is to say foods that are indigenous to where you live. It is not necessarily the variety of foods that have caused this change, but the fact that the foods that many of us eat in the West are overly processed and full of unnatural preservatives that are difficult to metabolize. There are many different types of obesity and people struggle with their weight for many different reasons. The reasons for gaining and keeping weight on are individual, so then, must be the treatment. What I tell them is that they must WANT to lose the weight. With the desire of the patient, and the skills of the practitioner, acupuncture really works to help you lose weight and get back to health. more...

Can acupuncture help with weight loss

Can acupuncture help with weight loss. Q: Can acupuncture help with weight lose? Weight loss was the subject of some critical scrutiny a decade ago, and the conclusion drawn at the time was that acupuncture did not have any significant effect on weight loss. However, trying to test whether acupuncture can help someone to reduce their weight is likely to be a difficult matter; there are dozens of reasons in Chinese medicine why someone's weight may be increasing. However, all of the best dietary programmes say that after the initial and often quite dramatic week or two most good weight loss programmes at best will see someone lose only a pound or two every month, and in fact, there is discouragement from trying to do more in order for the body's system to keep pace with the change. Acupuncture may well have been used successfully alongside some fairly strict dietary rules, and from a patient's perspective it would be very difficult to say whether the acupuncture treatment added value to what someone was doing already. The bottom line is that there are are no 'magic' points which reduce someone's weight without effort, and the effect of acupuncture may be no more than to give someone the support and commitment to keep trying with diet and exercise programmes. more...

Ear acupuncture 'can help weight loss

Korean researchers found that using five ear acupuncture points worked better than treatment involving only one point on the ear. One group of 31 were treated with acupuncture on 5 points of the outer ear called Shen-men (divine gate), Spleen, Stomach , Hunger and Endocrine. These were kept in place with surgical tape for a week, after which the same treatment was applied to the other ear, with the process repeated over eight weeks. All participants were weighed and measured at the start and end of treatment, and four weeks in, to see what impact acupuncture might have. Those in the 5-point treatment group saw a 6.1% drop in their body mass index (BMI) Those in the 1-point treatment group had a 5.7% fall in BMI. There was no change in the BMI of those receiving the dummy treatment. Measures of body fat also fell after eight weeks, but only in those receiving the 5-point treatment. more...

Acupuncture and Weight Loss - The Dr. Oz Show

Acupuncture and Weight Loss. Using The Healing Power of Qi For Weight Loss. Using acupuncture to tackle weight loss is a multi-pronged approach. The rationale for using acupuncture for weight control is based in the premise that weight gain could be the result of disturbed energy flow to and from the regulating center of the brain, called the hypothalamus. Research measuring the effectiveness of acupuncture for weight loss found treatments increased ghrelin, a hormone that controls meal initiation and decreased leptin, the hormone that regulates fat storage and metabolism. The guiding principal is that acupuncture can power up any other weight control strategy by curbing appetite, quelling cravings, boosting metabolism, improving digestion, regulating obesity-related hormones and enhancing the way nutrients are used. Acupuncture may also increase tone in the smooth muscle of the stomach to help people know that they are full. To pinpoint the Qi for effective weight control, acupuncturists take aim at 4 acupuncture points on the ear - the hunger point, Shen Men point, stomach point, and endocrine point. During some courses of treatment, the needles are covered with tape so that they can be left in place for a few days. Guidance For Using Acupuncture For Weight Loss. more...

Weight Loss - Austin Acupuncture Clinic

Traditional Chinese Medicine, the theory behind the practice of acupuncture, holds that disease and poor health are most frequently the result of imbalances in a person's body and its systems. Once Qi flow is regulated, the patient's own body returns itself to a state of balance and well-being. This same approach is used in the treatment of obesity, and to assist patients who wish to return to their normal, healthy body weight.  Needles are inserted in the ears and body for the first part of the treatment at the clinic.  Then “seeds,” small pellets held in place by adhesive medical tape, are used in the ears, and are inserted in the points controlling nerves, digestion, appetite, and the endocrine system. Individual needs vary, however, and patients with a lot of weight to lose are advised to revisit twice a month for maintenance or further treatment, as necessary.  Press needles must be replaced periodically, and the ears cleaned to avoid irritation and discomfort.  They are non-toxic and free of the dangerous side-effects usually associated with weight-loss preparations.  They are an ideal assist to the weight loss process.  By limiting appetite and nervous overeating, acupuncture provides valuable assistance in the struggle to regain conscientious eating habits. more...

Acupuncture for weight loss - Kristen Horner Warren

One of the most common questions that I hear is “does acupuncture help with weight loss?” The answer is yes, but with a few caveats. If you are looking for a magic bullet or are hoping that acupuncture will help you lose 30 pounds in 30 days, then you will be disappointed. If, one the other hand, you are looking for a safe and effective boost to your diet and exercise routine, acupuncture is definitely worth considering. When they are getting regular acupuncture treatments, people notice that: Ultimately, when people lose weight using acupuncture, the weight loss is very healthy because it takes place gradually and is the result of a real lifestyle change (as opposed to a short-term gimmick). If you are interested in losing weight, my recommendation is that you view acupuncture as one piece of the puzzle, not a magic bullet. more...

Can Acupuncture actually help to treat the Polycystic Ovary. According to the statistical data, there were the researches that have collected the following data: 84 women with polycystic ovary syndrome were randomly assigned to a treatment group for 16 weeks. The distinctions are: low-frequency electro-Acupuncture , physical exercise and no treatment. The measurements at the end of treatment and 16 weeks later were compared to the start of the study. Exercise; electro-Acupuncture and exercise improved menstrual frequency and decreased levels of several sex steroids at the end of treatment and at the 16-week follow-up compared with no treatment. It was concluded that the low-frequency electro-Acupuncture as well as physical exercise improved hyperandrogenism and menstrual frequency more effectively than no intervention in women with polycystic ovary syndrome. Acupuncture : Magic Bullet for Weight Loss? - The Dr. Oz Show

Acupuncture: Magic Bullet for Weight Loss? However, Traditional Chinese Medicine may be another option for weight management. In the recent May 2012 publication of Obesity Reviews, a team of researchers performed a detailed systematic review of clinical studies looking at acupuncture and obesity. When compared to no treatment and pharmaceutical medications, the acupuncture studies showed: Greater weight loss. As impressed as I was with this recent systematic review, I can remember a time when I was not so convinced of acupuncture’s effect on weight management. Confession: Once upon a time, I would cringe as patients asked if acupuncture could help with weight loss. I established a strong opinion that there was absolutely no easy fix in the battle of the bulge; a proper regimen of diet and exercise was the only viable option for weight management, end of story. We encouraged patients to be diligent with healthful diet and exercise habits prior to initiating acupuncture treatments. Week after week, patients began reporting success in weight loss, but, in my mind, I always questioned whether it was the acupuncture that helped, or simply because they were dieting and working out regularly. At some point in my career, I began to finally open myself to the idea that, yes, there is validity to Eastern Medicine’s approach to weight management. I began listening to my patients as they reported decreased cravings for salt and sugar, suppressed appetite, and weight loss. In addition to acupuncture’s efficacy on weight loss, scientists have provided explanations on how acupuncture promotes weight loss: Using integrative approaches like acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine may just be the additional resource needed to enhance your weight-management regime. I Tried It : Acupuncture for Weight Loss - Shape Magazine

After the birth of her second son, Allison, 25, found herself in the same situation as many other new moms with a few pounds left to lose and no idea how to do it. While she tried cleaning up her diet and she was a regular at the gym, the weight wasn't budging , so this mom turned to something a little less conventional: acupuncture. "I went into the chiropractor for my first time to get adjusted and have acupuncture done for my back problems,” she says. "I was asking about all the things acupuncture can help with and she mentioned weight loss. "I just had to lay there while I got pricked all over my body (which actually felt kind of good) and then lay still for another 30 minutes after the last needle was inserted. In addition to the weekly hour-long acupuncture sessions, the acupuncturist taped a small magnet to her ear that she was supposed to squeeze every time she felt hungry— a practice said to use the magnet's south polarity "to restore areas of weakness or deficiency in your system that can cause food cravings ." Allison laughs, "Yeah, I got some weird looks with that." The only reason I stopped was because it became a conflict with my schedule." It just helps give you an extra boost along the way." ( Check out my blog to see pictures and read more about Allison's experiment with acupuncture.) more...

Ear acupuncture 'boosts weight loss

The participants were randomly divided into three groups, one group to receive the five point acupuncture treatment, another the one point acupuncture treatment and the third group, the control "sham" treatment. The second group of participants followed the same treatment process but only had one needle inserted - at the hunger point. The remaining group believed they were receiving the five point treatment, but the needles were removed removed immediately after insertion, although the surgical tape remained. All three groups were then asked to follow a restricted diet and asked not to take additional exercise during the trial. BMIs, waist circumference, body fat mass, percentage body fat and blood pressure were all measured at the start and end of the trial, and at the midway point. During the trial, 24 people dropped out - 15 of whom were in the control group, perhaps suggesting that they found it difficult to regulate their hunger and cope with the restricted diet. But of the participants who completed the trial, there were significant differences in results. At the midway point, there were already noticeable differences in BMI with the five point treatment group showing a 6.1% reduction, the one point group a 5.7% reduction while the sham group showed no reduction at all. These findings were supported by the final results, which also showed that the five point treatment group had reduced measures of body fat. The researchers did note that there were no significant differences in blood pressure between the three groups. "Both five-needle acupuncture treatment generally used in Korean clinics and one-needle treatment at the hunger point appear to be effective in reducing body weight in the short term." more...

Acupuncture for Weight Loss - Pacific College

TCM and acupuncture play a vital role in addressing the concerns related to excess weight. The liver ensures the smooth flow of energy and blood in the body. Acupuncture helps a person lose body fat by decreasing the food intake and thus reducing the calorie consumption by the body. Acupuncture stimulates the release of hormones called endorphins that help to reduce the body fat and insulin levels. Acupuncture, when done along with regular physical activity and healthy eating habits, is very effective in reducing the excess weight and maintaining it. The most common form of acupuncture treatment used for weight loss is ear acupuncture. In 2003 the Journal of Medical Acupuncture conducted a study on the weight loss achieved through acupuncture and the results were very promising. The net conclusion was that it suggested that ear acupuncture when done at specific points along with reduced calorie intake and increased physical activity is a very effective approach in the treatment of weight loss. more...

Acupuncture for Weight Loss - Can It Help

Some proponents of acupuncture suggest that the needle-based alternative therapy can help promote weight loss. Research on Acupuncture for Weight Loss.
