That store-bought frosting from a tub might taste great on cakes and cookies, but it's packed with problems. "It's one of the only items in the grocery store that still has trans fats, which are terrible for your health and waistline," says Melina Jampolis, MD, physician nutrition expert and coauthor of The Calendar Diet. "These foods are bad on so many levels, because they are filled with high sugar content and preservatives for a longer shelf-life — they can literally sit there forever," says Dr. "Sugar increases inflammation in the skin, which on top of irritating acne and rosacea, can make you look puffy and bloated. Skip the wrapped stuff and grab fresh fruit for a sweet fix instead. "One can of soda is like a can of water with 10 packets of sugar in it," says nutritionist Bonnie Taub-Dix, MA, RD, CDN, and director and owner of BTD Nutrition Consultants, LLC. "The recommended amount of daily sugar for a woman is about six teaspoons or 24 grams, and soda has way more than that." Good old fashion H 2 O is still your best option. A bowl of Frosted Flakes, Froot Loops, or Cap'n Crunch might taste like nostalgia, but it'll wreak some havoc with its high amount of inflammation-causing sugar and gluten content. "For some people with sensitive skin, gluten can exacerbate breakouts, leading to increased redness and, yes, more breakouts," says Dr. "I know it's only 45 calories a strip, but it is really high in fat, sodium, and the preservative sodium nitrate," says Taub-Dix. "Stick to half a strip to crumble on foods like salads and sandwiches," Taub-Dix says. "These have artificial colors, like red-40 and red-3 dyes, that add no nutritional value," says Taub-Dix. Soy sauce is low in calories and has some good vitamins and minerals like riboflavin and vitamin B-6, but the extremely high sodium content will leave you bloated and at risk for conditions like hypertension. "There are so many low-sodium, lighter soy sauce options, there's no reason to buy the regular stuff anymore," says Taub-Dix. more...

The risk/benefit ratio of eating fish (the benefits of omega-3 fats vs. The risk of mercury) typically falls in favor of the omega-3 fats and their incredible health effects. Shark is one of the exceptions. Refined and re-fortified grains are grain-based foods like certain breakfast cereals , pastas, and rice products that have been refined such that the naturally occurring fiber, vitamins, and minerals have been removed. Companies then replace the fiber and synthetic versions of the vitamins and minerals that were initially removed. Sometimes (and this is really sneaky) they put everything back in naturally occurring ratios so that they can still claim the food contains ‘whole grains’. more...

8 Things You Should Never Eat If You're Trying To Lose Weight

Many believe that snacking frequently is the key to weight loss, but you have to make sure you’re snacking on the right foods. Lots of experts say it’s stupid to forbid yourself from eating certain foods – that denying yourself something you really want to eat can ultimately lead to binge eating and eventual weight gain. But some foods really do deserve the axe — especially if you are trying to lose weight . In which case, avoid these foods (when you can!) to fend off cravings and hunger, and support your efforts to slim down. When you eat crackers, dry cereal, bread, or rice cakes alone, your body converts the carbs to simple sugars, and sends it directly into your blood stream. The problem: You end up with low blood sugar and the same hunger pangs that led you to carb it up in the first place. Sodium makes you retain water, which bloats you up – so you won’t look and feel your best regardless of how much weight you want to lose. So skip them if you can, and supersize your portions of lower-calorie foods. Yes, everyone needs fiber — it keeps your digestive system churning and keeps you feeling full, even when you’re cutting back on calories. The problem (besides overeating, which can thwart your weight loss goals fast) is that when food makers remove fat from food, they inevitably remove some of the flavor. Another thing: Fructose, the natural fruit sugar that makes fruit and fruit juice taste sweet, tricks your body into gaining weight by blunting your body’s ability to recognize when it’s full, says Melissa Rifkin, a registered dietitian at Montefiore Medical Center in New York and a Rise nutrition coach. This makes you eat more, and increases your risk of developing insulin resistance and diabetes. more...

5 Foods to Never Eat - Weight Loss and Training

5 Foods to Never Eat. And if your fitness goals include getting a six pack, your diet is probably the most important factor to the success of your goals. The truth is, the lines often get blurred, and a lot of your food choices really do come down to your own personal goals. But there are a few foods that everyone living a healthy lifestyle should avoid, no matter the details of your own fitness plan. Let’s look at 5 foods you should never eat! High Fructose Corn Syrup – You’ve probably heard about it, but this item definitely tops the list of foods you should never eat. Your body can’t process high fructose corn syrup the same way that it does table sugar, so it’s more likely to be stored as fat deposits and mess up your blood glucose levels. Trans fats are the worst for your waist line! White Flour – I talk about this one quite a bit, and it’s one of the first things I tell my clients to give up. If you’re smart about it, some fat food can work with a healthy diet, but you really need to be smart. For the most part, fast food is full of trans fats, sugars, and white flour, so it’s all around a bad option for a fit body. If you’re living a busy lifestyle and need a healthy snack on the go, check out these healthy whole food protein bars – Pure Naturals Crunch Bars . more...

5 Foods That Make You Fat, 5 That Don't

5 Foods You Should Eat Every Day to Lose Weight

Eating healthy foods makes you feel fuller, and prolongs your weight loss progress. You can exercise as much as you like, but if your diet isn't right, then your progress will be minimal at best. The most important factor in your diet is calories - to lose weight, you need a calorie deficit, which means consuming fewer calories than you burn. While you can do this by eating whatever foods you like, you will get much faster results, and feel far better, following a diet composed of healthy foods, and five certain foods in particular. Blueberries are known for being high in vitamins, minerals and anti-oxidants, which all benefit general health, but a 2009 study at the University of Michigan showed that they may help weight loss as well, due to the phytochemicals they contain. You can also snack on blueberries when you have a sweet craving, because they are low in calories, yet still provide you with a small sugar hit. Grapefruit may help to lower your levels of insulin - a hormone that when present in the body in high quantities can trigger fat storage. When you eat, your body has to use calories to digest your food. Salmon is also higher in fat, and while this may sound like a disadvantage when trying to lose weight, it is actually extremely beneficial. Fat is certainly not an enemy when dieting, and it can help to keep you feeling full for longer. The huge advantage green vegetables have in any weight-loss diet is that they're extremely low in calories. more...

5 Foods You Should Eat Every Day to Lose Weight

The calcium in yogurt may contribute to weight loss. While your overall nutrition plays a role in weight and body composition, no single food can cause you to lose weight. However, there are certain foods you may want to include in your weight loss diet more often. Once considered off limits for dieters because of their high fat and calorie contents, nuts are now stealing the spotlight as a go-to food for fat loss. Rich sources of protein and fiber - two nutrients that help create a lasting feeling of fullness - nuts may contribute to increased satiety, and thus help you eat fewer calories overall. Nuts are also rich sources of monounsaturated fats, the healthy fats that can help prevent heart disease. However, scientists have discovered that the calcium in yogurt, and other dairy products may play an important role in its ability to promote weight loss. Researchers of a study published in April 2004 in "Obesity Research" found that increasing dietary calcium intake led to significantly more weight loss than a restricted-calorie diet alone, and that increasing dietary calcium intake from dairy foods, as opposed to supplements, led to even greater fat loss results. Compared to their refined counterparts, whole grains are rich sources of fiber that could contribute to weight loss. Because your body has to digest all parts of the grain, whole grains are digested at a slower rate and therefore contribute to longer-lasting fullness, which may promote reduced calorie intake. At the end of the study, the egg-eating group exhibited a 16 percent greater reduction in body fat and a 65 percent greater reduction in overall weight loss than the bagel-eating group. If you're not a fan of beans, you can eat a bowl of oatmeal - also rich in soluble fiber - and get similar results. more...

8 Foods You Should Never Eat if You’re

When you eat crackers, dry cereal, bread, or rice cakes alone, your body converts the carbs to simple sugars, and sends it directly into your blood stream. The problem: You end up with low blood sugar and the same hunger pangs that led you to carb it up in the first place. The point is that snacks containing a combination of carbs, healthy fats, and protein take longer to digest, and will, therefore, tide you over for longer. Yes, everyone needs fiber — it keeps your digestive system churning and keeps you feeling full, even when you're cutting back on calories. The problem (besides overeating, which can thwart your weight loss goals fast) is that when food makers remove fat from food, they inevitably remove some of the flavor. To compensate, they often add sugar, which makes the product even worse for you. It takes several oranges to make one 6-ounce glass of OJ, but when you drink juice, you consume all the calories from those oranges without the natural fruit fibers that fill you up. Another thing: Fructose, the natural fruit sugar that makes fruit and fruit juice taste sweet, tricks your body into gaining weight by blunting your body's ability to recognize when it's full, says Melissa Rifkin, a registered dietitian at Montefiore Medical Center in New York and a Rise nutrition coach. This makes you eat more, and increases your risk of developing insulin resistance and diabetes. The same goes for food you buy on sale: you're more likely to consume more when food costs less, according to another study . That's not to say you should spend more on food to eat less overall — it's unsustainable (and silly). It contains empty calories that don't fill you up or provide any nutrients; softens your resolve so you're more likely to overeat; and impairs your judgement, regardless of your weight loss goals. (It's why you drunk eat pizza, not salad.) But it gets worse: "When alcohol is present in your body, it's considered a toxin that your body wants to get rid of, and becomes you liver's top priority," says Dr. more...

The Worst Foods to Eat at Night If You Want

Eating the wrong foods will disrupt your sleep while also adding a lot of unneeded calories to your day. Instead of just diving into the nearest, tastiest-looking item in your fridge, here are five types of foods to avoid at night and why. Greasy, heavy, fatty foods not only make you feel sluggish the next morning, but they also make your stomach work overdrive to digest all that food. A little bit of something sweet before bed may be just what you need to rest happy, but if you gobble a huge slice of chocolate cake, the spike in your blood-sugar levels could cause your energy levels to spike and plummet, disrupting your sleep in the process. Like fatty foods, eating red meats late at night will sit in your stomach and make it hard for you to fall asleep while you're digesting (red meat may affect you the worst, but eating a large portion of chicken or pork would have the same effect as well). Spicy, peppery foods may upset your stomach, and the chemicals in spicy food can also stimulate your senses, making it hard to fall asleep. Keep the total amount of calories under 200 so you won't have any problems going and staying asleep. You'll also feel good knowing that you didn't undo all your healthy eating habits of the day right before bedtime. Small, light portions that will also calm cravings and help you sleep. more...

4 Foods to Never Eat if You Want to Lose Weight

4 Foods to Never Eat if You Want to Lose Weight (And Look Good!) It’s true: If you want to lose weight, eating less and moving more is the key to a slimmer bod. Not sure if your eating the right foods? But you may be doing your diet a disservice by eating these meals–here’s why. As a result, you may find yourself eating more calories when eating a frozen meal, in comparison to a home-cooked meal. As a result, you’re eating nothing more than glutinous carbs and far too little fiber.  A better solution: Switch white rice for brown rice, which contains more nutrients and fiber to keep your diet healthy. Why it’s bad: Although eating fruit is a good thing, dried fruit is processed and amped up to be nothing more than sugar candy. 5 Foods I Must NEVER EAT to Lose Weight! - Sooner or Lighter

5 Foods I Must NEVER EAT to Lose Weight! Well, I don’t have to spend a cent to know what 5 foods I need to avoid for successful weight control.
